Christmas Day dress code - at home!

Unread post by GillD46 »

Kind of combining the dress code thread(s) and the Christmas thread(s) do you have a dress code for Christmas Day when spending it at home?

When they were young, our children hated the fact I used to insist they dressed up for Christmas Day. Nowadays they turn up in jeans etc, whereas we ALWAYS dress up - I normally wear a glitzy top and smart evening trousers, Tony wears a smart shirt and trousers. Though I must confess, by early evening I tend to change into something I can really relax in.

This year, as we are in our own, I wonder will we still dress up? What do others wear?

Haven't been at home at Christmas for 9 years Gill but, when we were, I always used to make an effort from the moment I staggered out of bed, often changing 2 or 3 times during the day !! It's telling that nowadays you and your offspring have wildly different ideas of how to dress and I think this is indicative of society in general. For this reason, I think that it is inevitable that dress codes on cruise ships will be relaxed as the our generation gets older and the younger people take our place. Just another sign of a changing world. Things have to move on - and we have to accept it will happen.

And.....I suspect you will still dress up on the 25th - good for you !!

You mean apart from my Santa hat and reindeer antlers? But yes we do dress nicely, but not black tie.

We are like Gill - I usually wear some sort of evening type top with velvet trousers. John will wear a shirt and smart trousers and our girls tend to dress up a bit - smart casual I guess you'd say. Their partners tend to be slightly more casual. Now as far as New Year's Eve is concerned that's different - definite Black Tie. We have friends and one of us will host a formal dinner party so it's Black Tie. It does make the evening special - well for us anyway.

Absolutely, Carole. Making an effort to be a bit smart does lift things above the ordinary. I just feel that if you dress and behave the same as any other day of the year then the day becomes less of a special event. Also, making an effort to dress up, even a bit, does show respect for your host.

With 13 sitting down to Christmas dinner our rule is no jeans, open neck shirts is the norm. Like myself ties will be worn by some. The ladies always look nice.
Dressed as so, we do have a pre dinner drink down at the local hostelry, but, in these days of being able to buy clothes very cheap and look tidy in them, you still get the few who turn out on Christmas day in the pub as if they had just changed the oil in the car.
Don't worry, be happy

We have only had one Christmas day ( about 3 years ago ) at home in a long time but on that occasion yes I did make the effort and wore a LBD, Keith on the other hand wore shorts but I did forgive him as he was in plaster up to his knee having broken his ankle

It was a very nice plaster cast though with santa's on it

Due to the nature of my job I would have collar and tie on from the moment I got up on Christmas Day in case of call out, in the car would be other forms of dress like waders, waterproofs, hard hats wellies you name it.

But if we all got chance to sit round the table as a family we would all dress smart, the men had the obligatory Christmas tie and the women would have glittery hair pieces and illuminated earrings. A bit naff I know but Cheryl always insisted on it and who wants to upset the cook on Christmas Day ?

An LBD? Liberty bodice? Low backed dress? For the uninitiated what's an LBD?
I was taught to be cautious

LBD - little black dress? Alternatively - loose baggy draws?

Foxy can relate more to the latter - he probably calls them "apple-gatherers", though !

We used to get dressed up, which would include a shirt and tie, plus smart troosers at the least for our family Christmas meal at various relative's houses. These days, we have "dumbed down" ;) a bit, and usually wear a smart shirt with decent troosers (or possibly even "smart denim")

If it's anything like the Christmases we used to have at home, you need to add in mid-morning mince pies, afternoon tea, Christmas cake and cold meat supper !! Makes a mess of your acronym (or more properly "initialism") though.

I still haven't got used to not running the nativity 'do' in church at 10.30 - where I always wore a sleeveless summer dress ( if I wear anything heavier than that in church people panic that the Ice Age has returned!!!!) so I haven't really established a new dress code yet.

These days, OH is serving at the altar at the 8am service and I will go down early with him - spending the half hour he uses to set up the service putting away the bits and pieces from the Christmas Eve children's service the previous afternoon. Since that involves going up and down stairs with boxes of headdresses and stuff, I think trousers will be the order of the day - with a short sleeve tshirt.

BUT the daft Christmas dangly earrings will be on display
