Government Advice on Travel
Now that I've decided this is the forum I prefer for cruising information and other general chat (bad luck!), I have a question:
After recent atrocities, the Foreign Office has advised against unnecessary travel to Tunisia, Mali and various other countries. Why not France?

Re: Government Advice on Travel
Interesting question.
I guess the boring answer is that The FO guidance is based upon intelligence, and a risk assessment is made for all locations.
To be fair, the terror level in the UK is at a level which says an attack is expected. Given that, I don't think it would be feasible to recommend that everyone stays at home in their beds. Terrorism can affect any one of us, at any time - I assume that the powers-that-be have decided that France isn't at high enough risk of another successful attack to warrant a change in travel advice.

Hi annice...
In answer to your question l don't think other EU countries would take kindly to any EU member country advising against traveling to another EU Member country...tourism, trade links and he succumbing to what Isis want being the main reasons.... but not necessarily in that order.
Regards
Keith

..............mind you, we were warned about travel to Greece during their last Euro crisis, or one of them anyway.

Tunisia and Mali are both extremely poor, corrupted and vulnerable to discontent. They do not have the infrastructure to offer visitors a safe journey in any part of those Countries ... France is no less safe than this Country.
Simples ... I guess.

I agree - perhaps the FO should be advising us not to set foot outside...Manoverboard wrote:Tunisia and Mali are both extremely poor, corrupted and vulnerable to discontent. I think the thing with Tunisia is that western tourists are being directly targeted. With Paris it was indiscriminate - just whoever was so unfortunate as to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. It would be that same thing here - Paris is just as safe (or unsafe) as London

We'd all do the same things I'm sure to ensure our safety. But if we start avoiding normally civilised countries like France the terrorists have already won without firing a further shot.

Could it also be that it would be easier to help us home from France (Europe) than from other continents?
