Well you did mention "death" and Towny said "dead" and I quoted the "dead" bit and the topic includes "demise" so we may get away with it using the synonym defence. Worth a try any way...

Bit tenuous, but I'm willing to run with it (clutching a carrier bag, of course)

Never mind the lack of carrier bags, which we forgot to put in the car this morning, we didn't even have a pound coin or token to get a shopping trolley

I've got a few of those - one from the Dogs Trust and the Welsh Blood Service - as a donor you are given one with your blood group printed on it - problem is on the day they didn't have my group so I took a different one - just hope if I have an accident they don't kill me off :lolno:

We've got keyrings, but the tokens keep falling out of the trolleys at our Tesco. A few weeks ago, I managed to pick up a few pound coins that had fallen out  However, I can't find anywhere where I can buy replacement tokens. Our local Timpsons might do them, but they're always closed when we go into town.

Try typing in 'shopping trolley release key' into a well known shopping site which begins with e and ends with y. No need for tokens.

Not sure I get this thing about tokens and release keys and so on. We have a pound coin we keep in the car, with the reusable bags, and after we've used it we put it back for next time. And most of the keys on e-thing cost more than a pound.

Thanks, OBF.

We first came across these devices in France in '88, and a chap in the hypermarket car park was very helpfully releasing the trolleys and taking a franc from us. He did this for four coach loads of Brits. When we returned the trolleys, we discovered that a one franc coin is the same size as a 2p piece....

I have a feeling that the withdrawal of free carrier bags for clothing will hasten the demise of the town centre or even shopping mall outlets. Buying goods online is not only less stressful and warmer in winter, but it also means that your goods will be delivered fully wrapped, and with free click and collect and free returns its so much more convenient.

I wonder if USDAW have realised this, and whether they would be a more than willing ally in defeating this rather silly extension to the supermarket bag ban.

I fully support the efforts to reduce supermarket bags, we have used our own bags for years, mainly because its so easy. You know how many bags you need for a normal shop, and its easy to pack groceries yourself, whereas we never know how many or what size bags will be needed for say xmas present shopping, or even a shop to top up on our cruising wardrobes. I suspect that our shopping forays will become less and less as the annoyance of having to take a multitude of various sized bags with us whenever we visit M&S begins to bite.

Not sure if I should admit that I know this, but Primark are still giving free paper carriers!
