As usual Graham you are correct, the overpayment of course stems from the original Sky contract with the Premier League, but made much worse by those stupid people in Brussels demanding that there had to be competition to Sky resulting in a bidding war which drove up the cost of the TV rights. The result is the PL is awash with money and the winners are the players and managers, and the losers are the TV customers who now have to pay far more than if there was just a Sky benevolent dictatorship, as well as the FA and the England team, where Wwoy has a limited choice of players from the top league.
But then what do I know.

Nothing to do with the people in Brussels who are certainly not stupid. This is one thing you can't blame Brussels for.

Am I wrong in believing that it was an EU directive that football rights should be more competitive and that no longer was it acceptable for a winner takes all result?
If I am QB then I apologise, but I think you will find the EU brought in this legislation in 2006.

It was 2002 we went into administration due to building a new stadium in expectation of the ITV money, which left us with massive debts and a shed load of expensive players we couldn't get rid of
It has taken us a long time to recover.

Moby/Foxy, I sympathise with you both over the demise of ITV digital and the end of their football contract, but that's nothing to do with the EU competition rules.
This was when the EU demanded that PL rights be bundled up into 6 segments and no one broadcaster could have all 6, this resulted in Setanta getting 2 of the packages and grossly overpaying as well as pushing up Sky's price, great for the PL but not for Sky customers.
Now the same competition rules are possibly going to be applied to bank accounts, meaning we are all likely to have to pay for our accounts, which is intended to make it easier for challenger banks to get a major foothold in the market and increase competition.
Of course it will be us the poor punters who pay in the end, never the overpaid bureaucrats.

Sorry Moby but ITV Digitals demise was entirely due to them paying over the odds for Football league rights, mainly Championship or Leage one as it probably was in 2002.
The Sky competition ruling was only for Premier League rights, where they kept competition out by greatly reducing their bid if they did not get sole rights. Of course this did reduce the rights value but it meant that punters Sky subs were also kept low, the introduction of the new competition rules resulted in a massive price hike.

I wouldn't normally dream of posting on a football thread but feel a link with Leicester - my son lived there for about ten years and I visited often particularly after my granddaughters were born - the car was almost on autopilot driving up there

I can't believe nobody else wanted him nor the amount of ridicule when he was appointed from so called pundits and professionals, including a certain G.Lineker.

I read the interview with Ranieri yesterday. It seems that the owners (when discussing appointing him) asked if he'd be prepared to stick with them if they got relegated. I bet he wasn't expecting that question!
