The Daily Telegraph

Unread post by The Tinker »

Just a casual enquiry - my local petrol station keeps giving me a free Daily Telegraph everytime I visit - must think I look highly intellectual.

However, have never had the time or inclination to read newspapers and at £1.40 per edition, I am just intrigued as to how anyone reads this
giant? Tried sitting down with it on the settee - didn't work, - tried reading it at the table - definitely need to visit Specsavers soon!

So all you telegraph readers out there - is there a knack to reading this paper or is it just a status symbol ?

I read it every day, whilst sitting at my kitchen table. Have done for years, love it.

I used to read it at a desk or table, but its unmanageable size put me off buying it many many years ago. A shame, because IMO it's the best newspaper out there. Sales of The Times don't seem to have been affected badly since they went to tabloid size, so I wonder why broadsheets still exist?

I read it whilst perched on the sofa. Perhaps I haven't evolved properly and have abnormally long arms.

DH moans like mad about the mess I leave it in. I blame the butler.

After, but certainly not before, Mobietta has completed-ish the crossword and checked out the Travel pages in conjunction with moi I will then cut each of the double pages in half. Taking one of the halves I screw it up into a tight ball and place 12 - 14 of these little rascals on the base of the log burner ... add kindling, a firelighter plus a couple of logs then set fire to it.

A perfick use for this diabolical newspaper

Think it must be genetic...If Lizzie gets to it first then it ends up like a KFC car park after Gertude & Henry have blown through. We like the Telegraph for Sudoku & crossword (different sudoku on iPad edition sometimes) & the letters are often entertaining. Sport is also well covered although I was very disappointed when Henry Winter moved/was moved. Having said all that we are getting a little fed up with the quality of journalism often shown. There are too many 'it was reported in the Daily Mail' etc. ( rolls eyes) If it doesn't improve soon we may migrate elsewhere.
We are subscribers so get the paper cheaper & also get the iPad version without charge.
Don't agree with different editions being published for different regions (should be one edition with regional supplements as needed). The Guardian was the last bastion of one country, one edition policy but that went by the way several years ago.

I have noted, albeit reluctantly, the front page of yon rag from time to time on the Supermarket News stands etc but my eyes have yet to feast on the cr*p that may lay within ...

The Daily Wail, which we buy mainly for the puzzles and read between the lines of the stories, has gone up to 65p this week. That means to buy it and the Sunday version for a year now costs £299, slightly more than double the cost of the BBC at £145.50, which the Wail complains about so often. Hmmmmm.

haha - at least my tap's not leaking. When you live on the Moors, you get used to the damp.

A lot of paper there Moby I only use one sheet ripped into three pieces and certainly no fire lighters.
Try this method : stack your kindling rather like a game of Jenga but with a hollow middle and gaps between the rows for air flow then rip one sheet of newspaper into three pieces and place it in the void. Then put a few kindling sticks across the top with gaps in between and a log on top and just watch it roar, firelighters can be dangerous in an enclosed chamber like a log burner and don't do your flue any favours either.

Fair comment Merv and the BBC News Channel is updated regularly over a 24 hour period, as the song goes "who wants yesterdays paper ?" unless you've got a log burner.

Nice to know you are still loyal to your bosses at the Beeb too.

I use firelighters on the BarBQ as well ...

Newspapers however are a whole lot cheaper and indeed easier to obtain than piles of kindling, ours is a modest size multi-fuel burner and works well in the manner that I am using it ... I have however used your method on outside brick / chimney purpose built barbeques and that works well too.
