Eurovision 2016

Unread post by Raybosailor »

Eurovision Song Contest 2016 is soon to be dominating our screens like it or not, and the U.K.'s entry is by Joe and Jake two lads that were eliminated from the tv show The Voice.

Now I'm not knocking these two lads they have a singing talent and I wouldn't be surprised to see them on one of P&O's ships in the future but!! we all know that Eurovision is not all about singing talent.

"We give our lovely neighbours Azerbaijan 12 points" despite the fact that their song is s**t just about sums up the voting system in the non contest these days.

We could put international superstars like Elton John, Phil Collins, Adel and Ed Sheeran up on that stage with a song that makes number one in all music charts in the world but I'd be surprised if it won the Eurovision.

Is it getting past a Joke now or not ?, the rest of Europe and beyond actually hate the Brits anyway but I can't see that improving now we are contemplating pulling out of Europe.

It isn't something we have followed for decades, but from what I hear it really is a joke - for us anyway. I think the rest of Europe take it quite seriously.

I beg to differ there Gill, if the rest of Europe took it seriously they would vote more seriously and give their vote to the best music not based on political preference.

Does it not surprise you that wherever you are in the world you hear songs played on the radio from British artists but put one of them in the Euros and it comes nowhere.

Hi Ray,

If it was a choice between the Eurovision song contest and Channel 4 racing l'd definitely be watching the gee gee's. That being said l do watch the Eurovision song contest and over the past few years have thought the top 2/3 songs have all deserved to make it to the final podium...apart from the one where they screamed from start to finish that is. Sure there is a voting bias but at the end of the day l think it's just a case that our songs haven't hit the right note with the European voting panels.

Regards

Keith

If we vote to come out of the EU can we come out of Eurovision too? Just saying..................
I only watch the voting anyway - more enjoyable trying to predict where the votes will go without even hearing the songs.

I doubt if that would disqualify the UK from participating - after all, Israel's not exactly in Europe....

Really?
When I said nothing to do with Europe I really meant nothing to do with the EU. It's to do with the EBU which was set up in 1950. It includes Egypt and Azerbaijan amongst many others. In the early days they tried to think of something that could unite all its members. All they could think of was a song contest.

In my days in Television technical research I used to be a member on an EBU committee set up to determine digital TV studio video technical standards. My business partner was on the audio committee and was part of the process that came up with the Compact Disc. I have technical papers published somewhere.

We used to meet in Brussels though, does that count?

In the last 20 years there were only two winners that sang in a language other than English.

I cannot remember the last time we actually watched the eurovision song contest, must be about 30/40 years ago, however we did sometimes watch the voting, when we used to have a chance of winning.
But just in time along came PVR's and and we were freed from having to watch live TV and able to watch what we wanted anytime we wanted, long live Sky+ etc.

Surprisingly ( :) ) it's not actually a very good indicator of a song's quality. The song 'Volare' later made famous by Dean Martin was the Italian entry for the 1958 competition and came third.

There were two potentially decent songs in the final six. Neither was chosen. So what tiny chance we might have had is well gone.

Ah, but what you might consider a "decent" song is probably vastly different from Johnny Foreigner out in Azerbaijan. Perhaps we ought to get the Eastern Europeans to participate in the vote for our "Song for Europe" then we might stand a chance !!

'tis a poisoned chalice which you don't want to win. The winners have to host the next year's competition at their own expense.

In eurovision parlance there is no such thing as a potentially decent song, it has to hit you immediately as catchy, tuneful or totally different in order to win, or that's the way it used to be when I watched it, eg Waterloo, Puppet on a string, Making your mind up etc.
