This is my idea of the winner and at odds of 50/1 it's got to be worth a punt.

in 2013 the BBC spent £310,000.00 for the right to show Eurovision.

that's equal to 2,130 TV licenses

Not good value for nil point

I HATED that song. Don't know what QBob is on about re the skirts, as I was in Oman that year so didn't see it, but I had to play it every alternate record during our local hour-long "family requests" radio show

Don't we pay extra so that we're guaranteed a place in the final? I enjoy the show but object to pouring money in when we're bound to suffer humiliation in the voting system. Mind you, I agree that we'd probably lose no matter how good the song was but in recent years we have put forward a load of no-hopers. From the pair who sang off key to poor old crumbly Englebert our entries have been totally cringe-worthy.

I wonder if the new voting system they are trying this year will make any difference to the blatant political bias.

We and some of the others are guaranteed a final place because we put in the most money. (On the same basis we ought to get more votes in the EU!)

But in tv terms it's still a cheap show, going on as it seems to for about ten hours!

Here's an excerpt from the official rules:

"•Active EBU Members from a maximum total of 26 countries shall compete in the Final. There shall be six guaranteed places therein: the Host Broadcaster, five EBU Members from France, Germany, Spain, Italy and the United Kingdom."

I always thought that the UK were guaranteed entry as one of the founder members but it seems Merv is quite right about us chipping in the most cash:

"And why do the Big 5 always get a spot?
Well, they pay the most money to keep the contest going so it'd be a bit odd if they weren't always in the running now, wouldn't it?"

Isn't t'internet a marvellous thing ?!

The best song tonight was the mickey-take performed by the two presenters. How do I vote for it?

Interesting that the winning song was one of the few not sung entirely in English, I wonder if that helped it to win?

No need to go to Ukraine to check

Is it properly called "Ukraine" or "The Ukraine" ? You often see the prefix "the" in written reports

"Ukraine". For a reason I can't be bothered to research, Ukrainians get v. hot under the collar about it.

While we're on one of my favourite subjects, it's 'hoi polloi', not "the hoi polloi' and "the Baltic", not "the Baltics".

Bet you wish you hadn't asked. Aren't pedants b****y irritating?
