Which P&O livery?

Unread post by Frank Manning »

I am starting a large painting of Aurora this week, and I wonder what advice the community would give me about the livery. Shall I paint it with the old buff funnel, or the new (Carnival) blue one? if the latter then I have to put the union flag on the bows. (Yuk!! personal.)

I have given long thought to where to place the ship, but despite Foxy's suggestion to show her off Calshot, I am tempted to show her coming down the coast of Mexico with those beautiful brown boobies (Sea birds!!) diving all around the bows in the slip stream. We did that trip in Arcadia, and those beautiful birds were one of the highlights.

As it's a modern, contemporary painting, my preference would be for the current livery (sorry, Frank. I like it!). Love to see a piccy of the finished painting.

I am also with Cubie, much prefer the new livery, especially the funnel.

Trouble is I'm seriously old in shipping terms, with memories of Chusan, the Straths, Himalaya, and Iberia. I've just finished a commission for someone showing the Oronsay in P&O livery, but I'll see what everyone thinks. It may be more commercial in the new livery since all us oldies are a dying breed.

Aurora fans are mainly traditionalists and it would therefore seem appropriate to paint it for the folk who are most likely to buy it ?

ps ... in the buff cos that goes best with the boobies theme, artistically speaking of course.

I don't much care for Aurora but I definitely think with her lines, that the old livery was much nicer. I hate the new "look". And definitely the Mexican landscape for me.

In commercial terms I would say go with the new livery, reserving your other option for a Limited Edition Collector's print. I still say Calshot Spit mainly because I have never been to Mexico and probably never will whereas most people sailing out of Southampton will know Calshot Spit, and it's much more scenic than the grain hoppers at Mayflower.
Of course, knowing your penchant for boobies.............................. They are so Moneysupermarket Frank:lol:

if it were a smaller ship - like Adonia you could do her passing the Needles, but Aurora has to go the long way round

Hi Frank....when its finished just send it to me for an expert art appraisal... if its any good you wont need to be worrying about whether or not you've chosen the right livery as you won't be seeing it again. :)

Oriana has gone out through the Hurst Channel.

I'm a traditionalist and much prefer the original (and best) livery. This new stuff has painted over the name at the bows. No good will ever come of it :(

I think that I'll paint it and try to get as much done as possible before deciding. Then I can try the buff and if it looks wishy-washy try the blue. A part of any painting, is colour balance in the picture as a whole.

And while you did that Cubie slapped a coat of emulsion on his hall! :sarcasm:

But to return to the topic, on balance I now prefer the new livery to the previous. And let's not forget, the buff was not the original livery and there was probably as much fuss when that was introduced.

I wont be painting it black, the cargo ships were in those colours in the 1950's and 1960's, some nice looking ships too.

A request Frank. Is there any chance you could paint the Foxes club badge on the funnel? It would be nice to see Aurora sailing on the Soar past the King Power Stadium if you could fix it.
Thank you
