£450K for a watch

Flamin heck, some people have more money than sense

I don't even think it is an attractive watch. I wear a Citizen Eco Drive watch which I thought was expensive enough ... but the watch I have that usually gets the most compliments is one I got in Argos for under £10 in the sale ... and it cost me more than that to get the links taken out.

Both those watches are out by only a few seconds when it comes to resetting them for winter and summer time.

Well I will say anyway...it may get nicked ashore. They usually advise against wearing jewellery etc. ashore.

I had a £15 Timex watch for Christmas from my Grandson when he was 6, nine years and four replacement watches ( due to failed straps ) later I still wear it.

Some may need to know the time to a millionth of a second whereas I do not ...

I have a nice Omega, I wear it every day , why would I worry about only wearing it on when I felt safe

bloody pointless having it if you are too scared to wear it, might as well get a £10 watch off the market stall

My BIL works for a charity and was out in Africa with a work colleague ... his work colleague stupidly took his Rolex with him. They were out working with one of the tribes when the chief noticed the watch and started making gestures that he wanted it .. naturally BIL colelague wasn't going to give it up.

However the interpreter explained to him that the chief wanted to trade the watch and that to not do so would be a major insult .. especially in front of others in the tribe. In the end he had to surrender his Rolex watch and in exchange he got a childs Mickey mouse watch. From what I can gather the chief was more happy with the trade than BIL's colleague.

I won't be taking my Omega watch on my land holiday to the caribbean. It will be something considerably cheaper that looks similar, and a battered G10.

do you lot ever the leave the house in anything apart from body armour and an armed escort
what a bunch od scared timid people, funnily enough not everyone is a mugger in the Carribean

so you can wear ou trappings of wealth in the UK and Europe but not elsewhere

I'm with you DK, no point having nice things and not wearing them, I have 3 nice ( quite expensive watches ) I probably wear the cheapest of the three when I go ashore but only because it is my least favourite, at the end of the day my jewellery is insured and if I was put in a position of "being robbed" I would just hand it over - I don't wear any other jewellery so would hope I don't draw attention to myself ... here in the UK I wear my "nice" jewellery all the time, no point having it and keeping it in the safe

We did a private tour in Jamaica, (everyone seems to have it in for Jamaica and some don't even go ashore because of scaremongering). They don't know what they are missing on this beautiful island.

After our tour, and before we did the white water tubing, we had to put our valuables in a bag (sensible, we could have gone topsy turvy), hand them over for safekeeping and retrieve them at the other end of the experience; they were there of course, 2x cameras, (we took a waterproof one for the duration), watches, (if they weren't waterproof) and any currency that was in note form. We also had to consign our clothes to their care as swimsuits were obligatory!!

We both have more than one good watch, in fact we both have a genuine fake Rolex bought in Kuala Lumpur,

so we take the fake one as well as the good ones and nobody can tell the difference; we get confused ourselves sometimes

All our valuables are insured, and some items of jewellery are insured individually, in case the worst happens.

We are just as likely to come across a mugger on our visits to London or any European capital.

What a romantic idea of being mugged some have...it's not the gentleman highwayman saying "stand & deliver" it's more likely to be someone who is very nervous & worried about being seen, who will see your valuables bash you on the head, stick a knife in your back & you do not want a nervous frightened druggie with a gun after your watch.

Exactly Serendipity, and it could happen half a mile away from home, anywhere, doesn't have to be in a large city or abroad.

I answered the front door some time ago to a young person, obviously drugged up to their eyeballs; I defused the situation by treating them as I would any caller and asking where exactly they were looking for and guided them on their way. Maybe that time I was lucky but when we had 5 hoodies in our garden late at night and I dialled 101, I was told that it should have been a 999 call. Our daughter gave me grief over that, the daughter that is a police constable in London and attends 999 calls for far less serious situations.

We don't live in a city, just a small town and a very 'nice' neighbourhood, so, it happens anywhere, anytime.

Why does anyone need to have personal experience of being robbed to advise that to wear expensive jewellery in public is foolish? & the more the crime rate rises the more foolish it becomes. I tell you something though, it's a lot less likely to be mugged if you don't wear expensive jewellery. What is foolish is to land on what may be an impoverished area & temp fate, anyone wishing to rob someone can see the big ship arrive & they know that people will be walking about with stuff worth money. It is downright reckless to advise anyone not to be aware of personal security.
