What next?

Unread post by colin parry »

I went into a greetings card shop to get a card for one of my grandsons and the major display near the door was a selection of cards for "Happy St Georges Day. Is there anything that isn't covered by the card manufacturers these days?

I bet the shop didn't sell many, Colin.

I've just looked up some useless information about St George and he is also the patron saint of herpes, skin diseases, leprosy and syphilis. :o :o

Hi Maureen
I'm glad I'm Welsh. Please don't find similar aspects for St David!

It really irritates me especially when they reduce the space for Birthday/Anniversary cards etc and you only have a choice of half a dozen because there's an extended display of cards for something like St Georges / St Patrick's day.

I'm very unlucky with the choice of birthday cards. Most of our family seem to have birthdays near another celebration - mine is the middle of December and when I first knew my husband the suggestion came of a joint birthday/Christmas present - he never suggested it again. One of my daughter's birthdays is the week after Christmas - very poor choice of birthday cards. My husband's birthday is the beginning of February so the shops are full of Valentine Day cards!

Why is it that the English seem to do more celebrating on St Patrick's Day than St George's?

Probably a good job too, the reason card prices are so cheap is the extra profit margin they make on these special occasion cards. So we just have to accept the inconvenience, or shop in a more upmarket card shop and pay 5 to 10 times the price.

We very rarely buy a greetings card. The Lady C is a very "crafty" person and usually makes her own.

We no longer send Christmas cards, partly because of the expense of postage, and instead make a donation to charity

For some reason people who do this really irritate me!!!! I understand postage is very expensive but for us it is a way of keeping in touch with the family/friends worldwide and just a simple gesture once a year.

Out of interest do you not send any cards to immediate family or local people? And do you display the cards you receive?

I always purchase Christmas cards which are affiliated to various charities.

No, we don't, Tinks. My mother comes up to spend Christmas with us, so no point in sending her one (she doesn't give us one either). Claire's parents don't bother. Everyone else is local.

We do display what cards we receive, but can't help thinking it's a waste of money.

I'm not sure of the value of charity cards - I've heard that they don't get much back per card. It's not something we do at work, as we actively do not fundraise.

We try and get festive cards (although not many nowadays), which support a charity.

We do send cards to very close family, and to wonderful special friends. Cards we receive which are from people who we send cards to are displayed, and we have a couple of neighbours who we exchange cards with. I suppose for us the important factor is how much we keep in contact with people - those we keep in touch with and who return the compliment are sent cards.

inclined to agree with you, BUT if people do turn them over to see where they came from it does at least give a bit of advertising for the organisation

which is why we send charity cards (Mothers' Union)

I wouldn't describe a price of about £2 per card as cheap! As a comparison, similar quality charity Christmas cards, direct from the Crohn's and Colitis Society, are about £4 for ten (or 40p each for those who, like me, failed their Maths 'O' level).

Try the Card Factory Annie they have prices starting from 25p each, we generally pay 59p or 79p for most of the cards we buy.

It may be tat but it made the HTFC owner/chairman a multi millionaire, so the profits are going to a good cause. :sarcasm:

Easter eggs on sale here as well along side the reduced price Christmas puddings
Summer fashion in the shops as well makes me shiver just looking at shorts and t-shirts ;) although last year I was buying, as we were going on the Adonia in the Caribbean.
