New Forest Weekend

Unread post by suespud »

Well we had a good drive from Heathrow to the hotel, through the dark forest
Arrived at hotel..in the dark, no lit up signs to say where reception was or carpark.
Not a good start

Elmers Court was not my first choice..nor second or third, but thats where we ended up. OH knew I wasnt happy.
But it was the area really that we wanted to explore, so hotel wasnt "that" important.
As we had an automatic upgrade we thought the room would be ok.
It was ok.....
Food was ok...
We wont be going back.

Sooo we did Lymington market, weatherspoons for coffee..found a brilliant baby designer clothes shop with a 50% sale on, so spent a LOT in there for our four grandsons and twins due soon (boy and girl !!) got lots
of pink things !!!!
Aldo visited an Antiques fair in a church and bought some 1920's cake forks in a pink silk lined original leather box !! Love them.
Then we drove to Lyndhurst and had a lovely lunch in The Swan.
very nice and very reasonable.
Off we went to......errrrrr not sure exactly what its called Lymington again ?
Where the IOW ferrys leave from..well across there where the marina is. Had along walk there.
Then back to hotel for Dinner.

Breakfast was ok..typical Macdonald breakfast.

Off to Bournmouth via lots of stopping allong the way.
Had a lovely time and weekend.
Then back to Windsor.

Found out that we really want to explore the New Forest area a lot more.
Its an easy drive from here and sooo much to see.

I will pick and book hotel next time.....

Best look on tripadvisor.com before booking anything, Sue. I normally do that but, for some unexplained reason, failed to do so when I booked the Wentworth Hotel in Bath for a romantic weekend. BIG mistake.

I've just had a quick look and http://www.oldenglishinns.co.uk/ringwoo ... 4269b79d6b in Ringwood doesn't look too bad - it's right on the edge of the New Forest and also in easy striking distance of the Tarrants (a series of small villages between Salisbury/Blandford/Wimborne - very pretty, especially Tarrant Monkton, which has a picturesque pub next to a ford).

I do and did look on TA but my OH had left it so late to book that all the ones I told him about were fully booked or couldn't do two nights.
But we still had a lovely weekend. I will look at your link. Thank you.

We also looked at a lovely holiday park in the area.

My OH might be based down south a bit longer than we thought... so we wondered if it was worth looking at a Lodge, instead of hotel and apartment living and then our family could come visit and plenty for them to do.
Walks through the Forest, along the cliff tops..the views will be stunning, as well as facilities on site.
Hoseason have a couple of sites that I like the look of in the area and we used to have luxury caravans and rent them out at a Hoseason site in Northumberland ..so a lodge is a step upwards!!

Think a visit to both sites, to compare, will be needed to have a good scout around and check fees etc.
There were expensive in Northumberland.

Lots to think about. :D

Interesting, when we were in Lymington a couple of weeks ago the Wetherspoons was due to open on Monday the 18th of Feb.....must have opened early. :?
Surprised you didn't find somewhere to have lunch in Lymington, quite a few nice places there without driving all the way back to Lyndhurst.

Maybe you were mistaken, cos it was definitely open. Mind you there were queues outside when we were walking back to car park behind m&s.
The whole idea was to explore the area, that's how we ended up for lunch in lyndhurst.

You were wrong. It might have officially opened yesterday, but it was open on Saturday. There were even bouncers on the door. I was there.. you weren't.
End of.

Just found this post on Weatherspoons Facebook page.

Ian Feltham posted to Weatherspoon.
16 February
Just enjoyed lunch and a pint at a pre-opening event for the new Six Bells pub in Lymington. Lovely place and will no doubt visit again.

Well if we are quoting websites....

47-48 St Thomas Street
Lymington,
Hampshire
SO41 9ND
"This pub opened on: 19 Feb 2013
JD Wetherspoon
Type: J D Wetherspoon.''
But as you say, you were there of course... :?

Here is a link to Weathersfield Facebook page, if you look through the various posts until you come to the 16th February, you will find a post by Ian Feltham, which is the post I copied stating that he had been to the six bells on that date, and enjoyed a lunch and a pint, at a pre-opening event.

So why would you query that Sue had not been to the same event on that day, and that the 19th you mention was in fact the official opening day. If Sue says she was there on the 16th, why do you seem intent on querying that. Just accept it, then it's end of.

I am certainly not querying she was there, I am wondering why Wetherspoons are saying it wasn't open when it was. A "pre-opening'' indicates to me that pre= before = before opening however. Must be some sort of conspiracy where the website, the local paper & the pub themselves all say they opened on the 19th.
If Spud is interested my static caravan is on a Hoburne site not Hoseasons...

Glad you had a great weekend Spud.

Hopefully you got in the 'Spoons before the local alky's spoil it like they do in many places.

I have not seen anywhere where Wetherspoons have said that they did not open before the 19th February - perhaps you could post a link to clarify the matter.

I accept that they state on their website that this particular pub opened on the 19th but, in my experience, it is not unusual for such places to open a few days before the "official" opening if for no other reason that to get the staff familiar with the place - a bit along the lines of a cruise ship haveing a "shake down" cruise prior to its maiden cruise.

It certainly comes across to some that you were questioning whether Spud was there or not and could I perhaps suggest that in future you try to not post in what may be construed as a confrontational manner.

I am very disappointed that it seems it has to be proven that I was at a coffee shop on saturday.
