How do they do that?

Unread post by Ranchi »

Amazing video. I must admit that the first time I watched it I had the iPad flat on my knee & thought 'this us rubbish. The cameraman has taken a3 minute shot of the ground).

Keith,
To my mind the idea of taking a panoramic picture on your camera or your phone involves you moving the camera through a range of angles up to 360 degrees. The camera software then stitches the images together & you can then pan through the resulting image bit by bit. Now imagine that you are taking a panorama of your living room with your cat & dog sitting near the door. As you pan past the animals they are recorded as sitting peacefully together. If however they start fighting as you pan onwards towards another part of the room, then your stitched together picture will have no record of the cat & dog fight.
In this panoramic movie you can choose to look at the train as it passes you or turn round & look at ships at anchor east of the bridge.
To use the cat & dog analogy, you can pan through the room and depending upon how far through the clip you are and which direction you choose to look you may or may not see the cat & dog sitting peacefully or they may be fighting.

I was just amazed at the technology involved. Presumably there is come some software ' stitching ' involved but it's impressive to my mind.

Keith,
On reflection, it's the sort of thing that is commonplace in video games where the action changes depending on where you look or where you go in the game storyline, I guess.

Hey Ranchi.....many thanks for that explanation l'm seeing things a whole lot clearer now....l'm sure you have, but did you notice how the train becomes transparent as it passes the large colum (bridge sturucture) ?

On a lighter note l was quite impressed with how the train driver negotiated that tight bend
