Windows 10

Unread post by The Tinker »

Have resisted the temptation to upgrade to this as happy with Windows 8 - however, computer now telling me when it will do this and have to manually cancel before it gets any ideas.

Can anyone let me know if they have changed and what the improvements are or is it best to stick to original Windows 8

I resisted until recently too. Then, before I did the update I backed everything up, just in case. But when I pressed the button it all worked fine and all my software still works properly.

I'd got used to 8.1 but to be honest it's taken me no time at all to find my way around. Some things seem better, others not quite do good, but if you can work with 8 you won't have a problem.

The big plus of course is that in due course Microsoft will end support of 8 before they do so for 10, so a free upgrade now will put off the time when you need to do it again.

I was reading the other day that MS are in trouble for "forcing" the upgrade onto users.

To be honest I have had very few issues with Win 10, less that I had with Win 8/8.1 and I have been using it from the outset. The one thing I will say is that it is far better on a "new" machine than on an upgraded one.

Also just watch out if you have a limited download allowance as the Win 10/service pack will blow your limit.

The main benefit of 10 vs. my old win 7, is the speed of start up, apart from when upgrades are implemented, booting up in a morning now takes less than 2 minutes max, and Firefox or Chrome now starts instantaneously.

Go for it, Tinker. I've been running 10 since it was launched and had no problems whatsoever although, to be fair, I don't ask much of it.

Was doing a bit of hasty catching up yesterday, tinternet wise, and must have hit an update to Windows 10 ' link '. I recall a dialogue box but this I closed rather than responding to it.

Some time later a message was displayed on screen to say that Windows 10 is scheduled to be installed on May 29th !!!

I do not want it so what do I do, please, to stop it taking place.

I got up one morning last week, switched on the 'puter, went to get coffee and when I returned Windows 10 was actually downloading (according to t'internet, this has happened to others as well). The only way I could reject it was to wait until it had finished, then not click on the "do you agree to our terms and conditions" box. That got rid of it for now.

You may now be out of your (1 year)time limit for downloading Graham. I downloaded it months ago but reverted back to 7, but the icon for downloading is still visible on the PC and if I click on it I could if I wanted download it again.

Thanks for the help / info / suggestions chaps and chapesses.

QB's approach certainly does have merit and it also seems to be the easiest  so have been busy taking back-ups just in case all else fails or I decide to be a wimp and install Windows 10 after all ... 2 days to go and counting :wtf:

Very naughty that Microsoft didn't ask our permission( s ) :o

I've returned home and back to my laptop to discover that I'm virtually being bullied into accepting Windows 10. Previously I've clicked the option to say 'no' - and I've also tried delaying etc., but some artful and forceful bod in Microsoft is now giving me the impression that I don't actually have a choice. Well excuse me, but I always thought that as I had paid for the laptop etc., it was mine - and it's my decision what version of Windows I prefer, surely?

I've also started doing backups daily etc., belt and braces, just in case! One item which I read on my laptop said that customers did have a choice and could always reverse the process if they didn't like Windows 10. My point is that if I've decided I don't want it, why should I be inconvenienced with having it foisted upon me and then have to go through a process to try and reverse the procedure and hope that nothing has been removed, or altered. I repeat, it's my laptop - it should be left alone!

The argument from Microsoft is that the 12 month option for a free upgrade is shortly coming to an end and they do not want users to miss out - I can see some kind of logic there.

That is within a timspan of (I think) 30 days after installing it.

One thing to be aware of if you upgrade is that all your "old" Widows files are still on your computer and it is somewhat difficult to delete them.

I'm fighting a battle not to get Windows 10.

I've set my update settings not to accept auto-updates, and I Google every single update before I download them on to my computer.

There's only two months left for the free 'upgrade' to Windows 10, so it's not much longer to go.

I like Windows 7, I'm happy with it, and it does what I need it to do. I'm not going to be pushed into updating when I don't want it.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it, that's my motto

To be honest Gill Win10 is a far superior, albeit different, product to Win7.

The danger of keeping Wi7 is that it is EOL (End of life) and consequently will not be updated, although there is a possibility that if a major security issue was found it could be patched.

Precisely Gill W,

That's my feeling too. I don't want it - free or not - and I'm checking my laptop regularly and backing up important stuff all the time.
I've got Windows 8.1, it's fine - and I don't want it changing until I buy another new laptop. Then I'll change, and hopefully not one moment before. Hope all goes well for you.

Why update something that works just fine as it is. I don't go renewing our car just because a newer version has come out. Windows 7 has for me at least been running absolutely fine for as long as I can remember without the need for an update for well, I can't remember when I last had an update for it. I say, if your happy with what you've got and it works for you, don't be bullied into changing.

No - but if Ford (other makes are available) offered you a free upgrade I bet you would take it

I installed it shortly after it was launched and it didn't recognise any of my mp3 files, and there was another problem so I reverted to w7 after two days. I kept getting reminders and found how to disable these but Windows Update kept reinstalling the relevant KB and gwx.exe. I then acquired a desktop and put the laptop into storage. After several weeks, I thought it would be useful to power up the laptop to install security updates. I was amazed to see that the first thing it did was start to install w10 - not download, actually install. I cancelled this, made sure that gwx was uninstalled and tried again. Still Redmond's finest started installing w10. After the third attempt, I gave up and let it install. My main concern was that it would not recognise my DCC controller for the model railway, as that's all I will use it for, but it works and also recognises my music files. Not happy, though, that it was forced onto me. So far, it hasn't tried the same trick on the desktop, although I get an increasing number of reminders to schedule installation. I occasionally work from home with bespoke database software and the software company haven't yet cleared it for use with w10.

Directly after the Upgrade to Windows 10 on my Desktop PC can anybody advise ...

* Will Windows Live e-Mail still be up and running, with ALL my e-mails still intact ?

* Will my existing Shortcuts still be on screen ?

* Will all my Bookmarks / Favorites still be in situ as they presently are with W7 ?

* Does Norton work ok with Windows 10 or should I dump it / get something else ?

All help will be gratefully received

Not sure about that but if it is anything MS I suspect that it will convert it to whatever the current incarnation is.

Yes

They are nothing to do with Windows they are in your browser

No idea - it will probably depend on which version you have - you may need to upgrade. Norton site should be able to tell you

We upgraded from 8.1 so don't know if this applies to you Moby but shortcuts and bookmarks yes. 10 comes with the new Edge browser which seems to work reliably and imported bookmarks from my old browser. Can't answer for Windows Live but all my Outlook and Hotmail emails were present and correct. And can't answer for Norton but we use AVG (free) which is quite happy with it.
