I would dump Norton any way as it uses too many system resources at the expense of other software. There are far better protection suites out there

I agree Norton slowed down our laptop considerably, I dumped it last year for AVG (free) like Merv, and agree it is much better. Only problem is the routine pop ups trying to tempt you to upgrade to their premium product, which of course comes with a fee.

No - but if Ford (other makes are available) offered you a free upgrade I bet you would take it

Very unlikely that's going to happen.

I have recently purchased an HP all singing all dancing Laptop, which is brilliant

Of course the OS is Windows 10 which after some heavy editing edges Windows 7 IMO

Re. Norton you can load it to protect three computers with just the one annual licence fee

I once used a free security package, but was let down badly, of course if I did upgrade to their paid version this would not have happened :tired:

I would accept that there is a delay at start up ( using Norton ) and that further delays ' can ' arise if and when all the ' Add-ons ' are enabled but for the majority of the time it is, on my PC anyway, virtually transparent. My ' Deluxe ' version of Norton is for 5 machines of any type - be they PC, Mac, Smartphone or Tablet etc.

You may be aware that the Banks are looking to reduce their costs regarding fraud. New rules will soon be issued / enforced regarding the need to use approved state of the art security software on devices, there will also be a clampdown on poor password choices and management of same.

I wouldn't personally use ' free ' anything where my Bank Accounts are involved and certainly not for the sake of £20.
Keep smiling, it's good for your well being

My bank accounts have the added prorection of something called Rapport, which was provided by the bank itself, so they'd have a tough job claiming my protection wasn't adequate!

For banking, download Trustees Rapport - NatWest for one push it.

Don't rely on McAfee - we have that at work and one colleague had 19 viruses, another's was so badly infected it had to be sent away to be rebuilt. Neither are the type to visit dodgy websites.

I've heard that w10 has built-in antivirus software (not Defender), but would be inclined to ditch that and get AVG or Kaspersky

Regarding Norton, I think people's view of it dates from years ago.

I had Norton back in the early 2000's, and it was in your face and everywhere on the computer.

The next computer I had, I used a less well known security system, and ended up getting an infected PC.

With my current computer, the guy who supplied it said he'd put Norton on, and I wasn't keen, as I remembered it's system hogging tendancies, but he said it was different now,. And it is, it just sits unobtrusively in the background, and does what it needs to do

I will believe that when I see it. By the time it has spent going through the courts for a myriad of reasons I will be long past worrying about it.

I finally gave up on McAfee, which often churned away using 98% of my CPU capacity, when they downloaded an update which had a glitch that prevented my PC going on line. Their solution (when I searched using Trish's iPad ) was to suggest I download a patch to fix it! Think about it! Dohhhhh.

Barclays have been offering free antivirus software (Kaspersky) to their online banking customers for years.

Can I please ask you PC experts out there one question? I too have the W10 waiting to be downloaded and I won't have any problems with getting to grips with it as I have seen/used it a little and other friends have sung its praises. My query is that somewhere or other I have got hold of the idea that I would have to switch off my anti-virus programme (Bitdefender) whilst it downloaded. I am not happy to do that as I am thinking that I will let the upgrade happen overnight. Can anyone reassure me?

Many thanks in advance

Maureen

You certainly do not need to turn it off whilst it downloads - in fact you will not even know when the download takes place, and it can be over a couple of days.

I think that I have seen somewhere that you should turn AV/internet protection off when it installs but I never did and don't recall any problems.

I never had to switch anything off when I did my install and have been very happy with W10.

In contrast I have just tried updating my Garmin Sat Nav with map updates and the program kept hanging. Would you believe the only way I could get them to download was by switching off my firewall? Considering what a large multinational firm Garmin is I am surprised you have to go to those unexpected lengths just to update. Thank goodness for Mr Google.

Me again!! I have bitten the bullet and backed everything up to my portable drive and agreed to Windows 10 to be downloaded at 1am Tuesday 7th. Next daft question.................?.........................as I need to keep my laptop and internet connection open overnight..................would my automatic screen save (set at 20 mins of inactivity) b****r the whole process? Should I turn that off and have the screen glowing all night on my "home" page?
Answers please in words of no more than one syllable?

Thank you

Maureen

I would leave it be - the installation process will reactivate the screen and restart the machine once or twice anyway.

I've a Dell laptop and a mouse - or at least, I had a mouse. I had set the touchpad to be switched off using a special key above the keyboard. win 10 has changed the properties of that key and I've lost the mouse so now can't control the machine very easily

Thanks so much for the speedy reply. I will leave the setting as is. If I don't give an update tomorrow you will know I fouled up somewhere !

my machine decided that it wasn't good enough for W10

But SD's laptop suddenly loaded W10 few days ago - and she hated it.

We googled a bit and have removed it. Tried to remove the icon - Mr google said remove the KB whatnot Windows update.... did that and all gone - until next morning.... Hoping that once it gets to the 'pay for' stage (end of month?) it'll remove itself. in the interim she'll have to learn to ignore it

So far so good..................W10 downloaded overnight. OK All my files are where they were before (phew) I am now needing to find time to have a good play around and familiarise myself with it.

Thanks for all your help! That's not to say that I won't be back if I find something that perplexes me!

You are braver than me Maureen. I'm just too scared to go for it and am fed up with the pop up messages telling me to accept. I believe there is software you can download called 'neverten' that stops all that so maybe I should go for that. The reason for my Ten Terror is that I fear I won't be able to find anything and all my saved passwords will have vanished into the ether. I wouldn't even know how to back everything up - or that such a thing as a 'portable drive' existed!

Anne you can remove the KB3035583 update - it doesn't remove the icon, but stops the messages

True - but the next Windows Update runs, it reinstalls KB3035583 and gwx.exe. I heard this morning that clicking the little red cross to close the reminder window is classed as saying "yes but not right now", for which Redmond's finest have been roundly condemned.

what a bummer.

does that mean you can't stop it completely? Despite what umpteen sites on Mr Google say?

Looks like SD daughter will have to add deleting KB whatnot to her weekly schedule of jobs!

Do you think it might lessen once it becomes 'paid for' ( end of this month or praps next month)?
