Each to their own, qbman1. I used to enjoy watching England as well (and football in general) but since they became "overpaid, over rated" and over-ego'd, I'm afraid I've completely lost interest - shame, really.

Re: Euro 2016
Money has certainly ruined the domestic game - at the top level anyway. But I still think that at least to some of the players, it is an honour to be selected for their country.

Re: Euro 2016
Yes, I'm afraid you may be right, QB. Chatting back to referees, a degree of play-acting and more money entering the game does not bode well. On-field, it is down to the referees to stay strong and take a leaf out of Nigel Owen's book (at least as far as rugby goes!). He takes no nonsense from anyone, just as it should be.
Sorry, though - you started this as a football thread and I've declared my (lack of) interest.

Re: Euro 2016
Looking forward to the football. It seems a long time since the end of the season.
Unfortunately I don't have much faith in our Woy after the choices he made in his team selections at the World Cup andnow in the friendlies we have just played. I did think at one stage he was going for open, free flowing football but we now seem to be back to the 'let's pass it about until we reach the penalty area and then lose it because a) we don't know what else to do with it b) it's taken us so long to get here that all our opponents have had a chance to get back in position c) the penalty area is so crowded that there's no space for a scoring pass anyway so I'll just hoof it in the general direction of goal.
Meanwhile we will hold out for 0-0 and then lose on penalties.
Why does Roy insist of playing players out of position? Why does Kane, who was the highest goal scorer in the Prem last year, take free kicks?
I can't in all honesty say I am optimistic but at least let's give the Welsh a good thrashing!!!

Re: Euro 2016
Having had football in my blood from an early age and being involved at all levels from player, referee and local F.A. representative I have always argued for the love of the game passionately but as others have said there is too much money in the game and no passion.
I no longer watch pro football now but will support England in the Euros, but then again I support England in any event from Olympics down to tiddly winks contests.

Re: Euro 2016
Got to agree with you Foxy about Englands lack of shooting power, they should train with the England ladies team who demolished Serbia home and away with 14 goals in two matches.
Maybe Serbia are not the force of some teams but in the home game England ladies had over 50 shots on goal with over 30 on target, I don't think Roy's Rovers have achieved those statistics since he took over never mind one match.

So glad there's so much footy to watch as ill health prevents us from cruising at the moment - and the cruise adverts are constantly arriving through letter box and email!
I remember being on Oriana during one Euro competition - many footy fans sitting in the theatre in expectation, only for the satelite reception to go awry - pictures but no English commentary, so we watched it with German commentary instead!

Yes, we were on Arcadia for the last Euros. Great atmosphere, but rather glad there was a bar to repair to afterwards !!

After the antics of some England "supporters" I would adopt a zero tolerance policy and send the England team home.

Re: Euro 2016
How do you know they were England supporters? Whoever they are just cage them up for the next couple of weeks; football supporters, hooligans travelling as supporters or not, and bang up those who set out to cause trouble as well.
Why deny the greater majority of England supporters who do know how to behave the opportunity to follow their team because of the mindless idiots who have jumped on the bandwagon? Hopefully the French police will not be as tolerant as our police are.

I suspect the French police will just be grateful they were England supporters and not IS terrorists.

Re: Euro 2016
Well done Wales on a spirited performance. A thoroughly deserved win.
England suffered from an interesting team selection by our Roy with only one recognised goal scorer in the team and he was taking the corners!!! Vardy would have thought he was in seventh heaven in the first half with all the space behind the Russian back four. We should have had it all sewn up by half time judging by the chances we had but as the game wore on the Russians became more of a threat and ultimately we paid for it. Roy chose to pack out the midfield and we gave away a soft goal in extra time.
As for the hooliganism I am totally disgusted but feel the relationship between alcohol and loutish behaviour is almost endemic in our younger (and older) generation. What is it with some people that they can't go out, have a few drinks and a god time without wrecking the place or fighting anything that moves. Are we simply too lenient on them?

Re: Euro 2016
Thinking just about the football, what concerns me is that the Russians played with no wide men and full backs who rarely attacked, leaving England to dominate possession on the flanks, and still we were unable to score from open play. How is our paper thin defence going to fair against a more skillful and attacking team?
I also thought we lost our shape in midfield after the substitutions, Rooney was impressive Wilshere was ineffective, Sterling did create some havoc, even if his final pass was missing, Milner looked half asleep, and why did Woy not replace Kane with Vardy???
