When you leave a few lights on, "its like Blackpool illuminations"
An old Nottingham saying when you left the door open was "its like Narrow Marsh in here" relating to a dark and dismal place of ill repute back in the 1800's.
If you didn't answer our mum she would say "whats up has cat got yer tongue"

Re: The Things Your Mother Used To Say
It wasn't so much what my mum said, but she had an uncanny sense that knew when I was up to mischief.
Their house had been in the family since 1920, so when she was a child she spent a lot of time there. Therefore, she know all the mischief in the area that it was possible for a child to find. As soon as I got up on the dangerous roof, she'd appear to shout at me to 'get down this minute'!

Re: The Things Your Mother Used To Say
Reading Gill's post for some reason reminded me of a couple of visits to Amport House, the RAF Chaplains' School. On the first occasion, the head honcho almost bawled at the children, at the welcome brief, to stay away from the wooden fire escape ladders (fire escape ladders made of wood, I ask you!!) under trap doors in the corridors on pain of something unpleasant. On our next stay, the new head honcho was at pains to point out the fun that the children could have on the ladders!
I can't actually remember anything that my mother used to say!

My mother never said she had bought a piece of cod/plaice et al but always " a nice bit of fish"!! We (OH and I) have referred to fish in that vein to this day.
