Well you two ladies did get me thinking so I did a little exercise, I made sure that the seat, lid and even the top of the basin was completely dry then the seat and lid was lowered and after three full flushes all were completely dry. Have you both got close coupled low level cisterns or the old fashioned 5 foot of head type because I have fitted more toilets in properties than I care to remember but splashing out of the bowl is alien to me.GillD46 wrote:Better they hit the seat than your toothbrush or tooth mug!Raybosailor wrote:Gill/Barbara, you put the lid down over the toilet basin then flush is that right ?Barb44 wrote:I agree with Gill - seat and lid down before flushing to avoid germs travelling in spray.
So what happens to the spray containing the germs that hit the bottom of the lid and probably bounce onto the seat ?.
I once made the mistake of flushing the toilet without closing the lid, after I had put bleach down. Even though I was about 8' away, the spray bleached my clothing, proving without doubt how far the spray travels.
Now if the toilet had contained solid waste...........well, not what I'd want on my clothes or toothbrush.

Re: Seat up? Or seat down?
My bathroom was fitted last year with a close coupled toilet, as was Tony's the year before. The issue was when the lid was up not when down. I ruined a pair of black linen trousers with bleach spray.

Ours is close coupled and the en-suite toilet is set into a vanity unit. It is not so much the water that sprays into the air but microscopic particles of bacteria.

Same as walking on the outside of a pavement.
As for the lid, I couldn't care less............... as long as those using the toilet lift it before use!!!
It was so that the gentleman could easily draw his sword to defend his lady, actually.

Our main toilet is not in the bathroom so no worries about spray going anywhere

Sorry Wolfie I didn't know you came from gentry, yes the gentleman always kept his sword arm free but another reason for the gent to be on the outside was he wore boots and trousers which was less likely to get messed up by sewerage than a ladies long dress.wolfie wrote:Raybosailor wrote:I think the pavement rule is a bit outdated now Wolfie as people no longer throw their sewerage out of the bedroom window. One of the cleaning programmes on TV years ago had some sort of UV gadget to show the extent of microscopic spray after flushing, after seeing that lid down before flushing for me too!

Trust me joanneb...The spray you get from flushing the toilet is nothing compared to that which you get when a man's pee hits the pan.

Re: Seat up? Or seat down?
Japan's Government run television broadcasting station, recently devoted a tongue in cheek documentary about housewives complaining to husbands about having to constantly clean up the pee-splatter around the toilet bowl. All kinds of interesting strategies were used, and being a bachelor, many of which I had never imagined ... body contortions that looked like a cross between sumo and yoga, placing a sheet of toilet paper on the surface of the toilet bowl water, and so on. But in each case, a flood of U.V. light showed the unmistakable splatter of pee, not only around the toilet bowl, but decorating the walls, as high as a meter above the toilet bowl in those bonsai-sized rooms in which the toilet is usually housed.
After showing results of fluid dynamics research abroad (yep, those same guys in Utah, as well as research in Europe), the conclusion was that the only way to avoid splatter would be to pee in the bowl at approximately 15 cm from the surface of the water ... which would put most men in an excruciating yoga-like position.
qb.....having read the above l can only deduce that you are either build like a donkey or you're a wall splatter like the rest of us...less of course you do a Garland pose every time you take a p*ss
P's ..you started this messy old business I'm just giving you the facts

Re: Seat up? Or seat down?
Being a keen sportsman in my youth I used to suffer with athletes foot and it was nothing to do with personal hygene but hours spent in trainers and football boots.
After several visits to the doctor and trying many creams, powders and lotions with little success the doctor said that he too used to have the same problem and suggested that the best cure was free and readily available.
He told me to buy a cheap washing up bowl and pee in it then stand in the urine for as long as I could take it before washing my feet and drying well then dust the feet with brassic powder. The athletes foot disappeared after a couple of weeks and never returned. My son, many friends and recently my grandson took a while to be convinced of this method but all had similar results.
So if you know of anyone that suffers from athletes foot tell them to do what the troops in the trenches did, p*ss in your boots.
Someone will probably put me right but I would have thought that if your urine had any harmful bacteria in it surely the bacteria would have done you more harm on its way through.

Unless you have a infection, urine is sterile until it is outside the body, then it becomes contaminated.

Just back from the Glastonbury Festival and, trust me, you would not be touching a toilet seat there so basically if its up it stays up or vice versa!

It's the outside privy that has the family crest on it, the one that is used by the gardener, handyman, and other workmen, just so's they know their place. Can't have them spraying everywhere
I wouldn't be so vulgar as to show it off in one of the indoor loos!
I do have standards.

Indeed it is. My eldest daughter got stung when we were in the Bahamas, so she popped her hand in her bikini bottom, did the business and voila - considerably less pain!Stephen wrote:Raybosailor wrote:Being a keen sportsman in my youth I used to suffer with athletes foot and it was nothing to do with personal hygene but hours spent in trainers and football boots.

I know of gardeners in nearby allotments who put nettles and other weeds in a tub and pee on them, the urine breaks down the the vegetation into a liquid fertiliser which when diluted does not smell and is full of nitrogen.
Urine is said to be good for the treatment of eczma too.
