Wimbledon 2016
Since we already have the Euro 2016 thread running, we ought to have a tennis one for those not that way inclined !
Two hours in and we already have a couple of "gallant British failures". Here we go again.....!

Re: Wimbledon 2016
I'm not sure it's right that the tournament organisers give so many wildcards to British no-hopers. Yes, it's nice for the crowds to have a British player to cheer on but few of them make it past the first round, and often take the place of some much more deserving (and talented) players. I reckon they ought to take their place in the qualifying tournament and, if they are good enough, work their way through to the main draw like Marcus Willis. He had played and won 6 matches on his way to Round 1 so was on form and good enough to beat a much higher-ranked player on the day and no one can say he doesn't deserve to be where he is now.

First round losers receive in excess of £20000. Not a bad hourly Tate!

Fair point, Colin. So giving a wildcard is akin to handing someone the average annual salary for a real worker (and no need to do anything other than lose a 2 hour tennis match) !

OK, we have 9 British players out now and 6 still in (although 3 have those have still to complete their first round matches). Looks like we will all end up cheering for Mrs Krankie's love child again !

I didn't see the match but the paper this morning said that Marcus Willis looked like the winner of a "Play Roger" competition !

Good luck to him but, personally, I have my doubts. Remember Chris Eaton who also came to Wimbledon unheralded a few years ago and won a match or two but who has heard of him since ?

Re: Wimbledon 2016
Ok so he lost in three straight sets 6-0,6-3,6-4 but the lad got to break point on Federer the world number 3 which is something those ranked 700 places above him struggle to do. He beat the world number 53 to get to the second round and fully deserves the prize money he collected.
Out of the 18 games needed to win the match Willis took 7 of them and over the two rounds he served 23 aces compared with Federers 21.
Willis lost quite a lot of points trying to lob Federer and failed to capitalise when he actually had the number 3 on the ropes. I have to agree with McEnroe who was impressed with his play but said he has to concentrate on his fitness and movement around the court.
All that said Mr. Willis, his family and many fans should be proud of a gutty and entertaining performance.

Well done Dan Evans - he's beaten Ukrainian 30th seed Alexandr Dolgopolov and will face Roger Federer in the third round. Federer must think it's his birthday!

I see that Marcus Willis is first reserve in the mixed doubles and will play if anyone drops out. Should be interesting.
Who else is on today ? Mrs Krankie's love child ?

Federer's got a bit of a battle on his hands. He's 2-1 down and 4-4 in the 4th.
