Re: Euro 2016
Took my dad out to do his shopping yesterday, everywhere we went all people were talking about was the football. Cars are going around with welsh flags on them. It's great.

With that sort of judgement Raybo you would make a good candidate for the England job. Certainly better than the last incumbent.Raybosailor wrote:Oh Nooooooooo!! I just hope the Icemen don't get thrashed. 4-1 sounds a bit more respectable.

Well little Iceland are out but what a gutsy performance they put up. They never gave up and neither did their supporters either in France or in Reykjavik. We will miss them.

At least Iceland put two goals past the French - which is 2 more than England would have managed

The way they played last Monday, England would have struggled to put two past the Luton Girls' Choir !!

Re: Euro 2016
I've tried, I really have, but I just cannot work up any enthusiasm for Wales tonight. Probably still sour grapes and probably makes me a really bad person but I'm sorry, especially to Lindsey and Blod.
At 8pm tonight I shall probably be out in the garden enjoying the fruits of my labours and enjoying a meal with home-grown potatoes, broad beans and courgettes !

Re: Euro 2016
Just watched interview on BBC with Roger Speed (Gary Speeds's father) and I'm blubbing - flippin heck I'm not a football fan but the emotions are running high here today and the coverage on tv is unbelievable. Whatever happens tonight as a nation we are so proud of our boys and I believe the UK are behind them too - "together stronger"
(Still don't like that silly top knot on Gareth Bales
)

Its just a welsh thing it doesn't really matter if its football or rugby its the passion.
I'm not sure if I can bear to watch this evening, maybe from behind the sofa.

I dislike football with a passion, though enjoy rugby, but even I am caught up in the football fever. I am so proud of the Welsh team and our village is awash with flags and banners.
I really hope they do well this evening, but even if they lose, they have done amazingly and we'll still keep a welcome in the hillsides!

It started when we were in Betws y Coed and England were playing Greece. The greatest cheer from my Welsh 'friends' came when England were losing fortunately saved by a Beckham free kick. I have to say we don't find northern Welsh the friendliest or most welcoming of clans.
However we are down in Pembrokeshire at the moment and those we have met could not be friendlier. We feel the excitement and passion for their team but their Welshness isn't rammed down your throat at every opportunity.
I now have a dilemma and whilst I may not be dancing in the street if Wales win neither will I be leaping around if they lose (unlike the Welsh team when England were deservedly eliminated).
The only consolation I can find is that Wales lost to the worst team in the finals.
If it's any consolation Jan and Lindsey, I can't stand Murray either!!!!!

Re: Euro 2016
Well even though I'm not remotely interested in footie I'd like Wales to win tonight after all they are part of Great Britain so we should be cheering them on, I assume they were pleased to see England go out but is that any different to how England would have reacted if the boot had been on the other foot ( pun intended )
Foxy, my husband worked in South Wales ( Merthyr Tydvil ) on/off for a number of years he made lots of friends and was welcomed into many homes, he has nothing but nice things to say about the Welsh for how nice they were to him so I know who he'll be cheering for tonight.

Yes, I know what you mean - sometimes there's an almost aggressive brand of Welshness that's off putting.oldbluefox wrote:I'm afraid I tend to be with you qbman.qbman1 wrote:I've tried, I really have, but I just cannot work up any enthusiasm for Wales tonight. I was only 6 when England won the World Cup, and although I remember it, i don't really remember what the atmosphere was like.
But I do remember what it was like in 1990 and 1996 when England last did well, and the atmosphere was fantastic.
So I can imagine what it must be like in Wales this evening - the excitement must be at fever pitch, especially as no one would have ever dreamed that Wales would get this far.
I haven't really cheered for Wales before now, but I will be this evening (which will probably be the kiss of death for them).
Should be a great occasion
Gill
