Following the runaway success (!) of the Euro 2016 and Wimbledon 2016 threads, I thought we ought to move on to the golf. At least Bale isn't in it !

I do wonder about these bloody golfers - they are getting as bad as the overpaid footballers !

Rory McIlroy says he has no interest in the Olympic golf but worse that he is effectively only in it for the money and feels he has no responsibility to promote the game of golf. What an a*se !!

I think he and the other top layers who have withdrawn are just using zika as an excuse and will be off lining their pockets somewhere else whilst the Olympics is on.

Probably not - because he will earn money there !!

Mind you, the olympic golf course didn't look that appealing with sewage-filled ditches around it !!

I am a bit peed off that BBC have dropped the live Open Golf, and now we would have to pay Sky - no way!! If I was going to voluntarily pay my TV License this year, that has made me think again. Good money to watch endless political analysis and character assassination from Laura Kuenssberg?

It will have to be the highlights every evening, while keeping the Flit Gun (remember them?) handy for the Zika Mossies.

Rory McIlroy's attitude is appalling. Not interested in developing the sport, only what he can earn from it. Mind you this is the same guy who broke off his engagement to Caroline Wozniacki. I see he has a new lady in his life so Erica Stoll had better be careful. Seems to me he thinks only of himself.

Agree entirely with Frank Manning and Old Blue Fox, disastrous comments from the petulant brat who bounces with the selfish arrogance of a spoilt child. The BBC gave away the golf a year earlier than necessary, sadly we have had to buy a one year package from sky to watch it, having given it up some years ago as a protest to paying for others to watch the so called beautiful game.

Trouble is you can pay up for Sky Sports only to find it's on BT so really you need both. Not this one!!! I got Sky Sports for free for 3 months and was not that impressed so I'll certainly not be paying for it, especially if my money is going to line the pockets of people like McIlroy. What a disgraceful role model for younger players and those who put so much into promoting the sport.

Compare Rory McIlroy with Justin Rose, chalk and cheese. Justin Rose a fine gentleman who understands his responsibilities. Meanwhile sky, know exactly what you're saying, but in retirement am missing my cricket, rugby and golf.

Do the golfers who have refused to play in the Olympics because of moggie bites know that they will get bit to death by the midges at Royal Troon.

It is a shame that the BBC no longer screen the Open but it is an excuse to go to the pub and watch it on Sky there.

I am not bothered either way but I did read that the golf course to be used during the Olympics was recently laid on a swamp which was full of mozzies, Zico or otherwise. I believe that I would also have opted out of playing on such a course.

ps ... I also fail to see the point of including golf in the Olympic games

Agreed, there probably isn't much of one but the real point is that it is there and these so-cal;led "superstars" should be honouring their commitments to the sport that has made them rich and famous !

Will Vardy or Joe Hart be playing in the Footy Olympics ... of course not, they are also professional sportsman who earn their crust ( large ) by playing footy for money rather than for a vain hope of getting a medal.

There are many other ways of supporting the sport that made them rich and famous and most are far more worthwhile than chasing a medal in a foreign Country with whom they have no particular affiliation.

We each had a job or profession at some part of our working lives ... should we also be expected to give something back ?

My view is ' Not unless I want to ' and being honest about the reason is surely better than making up some ' to be well received ' response.

Perhaps it depends on which newspapers you read but I believe that what he said was " I didn't start to play golf inorder to deveop the sport, but to earn money, but now that am established, I do what I can to encourage youngsters to play", which I believe he does.

Where McIlroy differs from many other golfers, and sportsmen generally, is that, when asked a question, he appears to try to answer as honestly as possible, rather than giving bland, practiced responses.

Yes, he can occasionally behave a little petulantly when he fails to maintain the high standards to which he aspires, but so do many others. He remains true unto himself and deserves our respect for that, in my opinion

An excellent tournament, though, and a very worthy winner.
