What email software?

Unread post by oldbluefox »

What email software is everybody using?
I am currently using Windows Live Mail which I like. It allows me to compose groups for sending out emails and works pretty well. However it looks like Windows in their wisdom are try to withdraw support for it and I now have an error message every time I open it saying it won't connect to the Windows Live Calendar Service, something I don't use anyway. However I haven't found a way around getting rid of the error message so I'm thinking of moving away from Live Mail anyway.
Windows Mail, I have found, is a waste of space but looking through comuter magazines quite a few alternatives are out there, amongst them Thunderbird (which seems to get a thumbs up), Opera, Pegasus Mail, Incredimail, Mulberry, Foxmail (like the sound of that!!!).
Has anybody any experience of any of these before I make the leap into the unknown?
Ta!!!

(btw Dancing Queen told me to ask!!!!   )

Isn't that the one which comes with a boiler and a shovel? I didn't realise it's still on the go.

I use MS Outlook and have for years. I have "played around" with Thunderbird on occasions and was quite impressed. One thing to bear in mind with whichever one you choose to go for is whether you can import your existing mail data (inbox mail, sent mail, saved mail, address book) into the new mail client.

I use Windows Live Mail ... without any unwanted messages, thus far.

A cautionary note for those of you who are on Vista else Windows 7 or 8. Sooner or later Microsoft will upgrade you to Windows 10 and when it does Windows Live Mail will operate exactly as it did on the previous level ( automatically ) without losing any of your contacts or e-mails etc ... this will NOT be the case with any of the opposition that OBF is highlighting.

Indeed, David. That's why I thought I would ask.

Mob, I am using Windows 10 and this is where the problem arises because Live Mail is part of the Windows Essentials package which worked on W7. For some reason known only to themselves they are discontinuing elements of Live Mail on W10, presumably because nobody likes Windows Mail.

Me too.

Actually there are a whole bunch of things in Windows 10 that are usable in spite of being entitled ' Windows 7 ' ... Backup and File History for example. According to my ' In Easy Steps ' type Books on the subject Live Mail is not shipped with Windows 10 but can still be loaded from Windows Elements.

I use my ISP's own e-mail, which in my case is Sky via Yahoo on the laptop, but I use the embedded one on my Samsung tablet, which I assume is their version of google's android e-mail which is synchronised to my Sky account, but not to the full list of contacts unfortunately.
Rarely have a problem it does what I need it to, and I can attach photos and documents to e-mails with ease, and the benefit is I can access this easily on any computer anywhere.

Hi OBF, I also use Windows live mail and as you say it is nice and simple to use. I haven't experienced the problem you mention, perhaps you are using an outdated Windows (?). My only gripe is that if I so much as turn my other PC (Windows 10) on (Not even trying to open e mail), BT somehow sees it and stops me accessing my email until I have changed my password. It has got so bad that my lap top lays unused unless I take it out of range of my BThub. Sue uses Outlook for hers and has no problems at all.

Sorry, just seen that you are using Windows 10 (which I hate with a vengeance; give me drop down menus every day). My lap top W10 came with its own email programme which as I say I dont use because I find it inferior to Live mail.

I have had mine for many, many years - a BT Yahoo account - and my iPad and mobile just picked it up, so after so long I have no idea what it was originally.

Personally I would not touch gmail or hotmail with a 10 foot bargepole - unless you want Google and Microsoft respectively to scan your emails

Without any shadow of a doubt - but not for commercial reasons.

If anyone can find anything interesting in my emails they're welcome. I'm not even sure the people I send them to read them!

Why on earth would anyone want to spend corporate funds on such a waste of time, would it not be better for them just to pay their fair share of taxes.

In fact if they give me an address I'm more than happy to copy GCHQ in to avoid any need for effort on their part!

They can scan mine as much as they like. Most of them are boring.

I just use the browser for gmail, yahoo, hotmail, livemail etc. In work we use Outlook and when I am on the move I use outlook webmail. There really isn't a need for an email client for many people - just a browser.

I would be careful with Thunderbird at the minute because its ongoing maintenance is currently uncertain which means it could be a security risk.
