I'm more than surprised to see that "triggering the brixit process" has so many votes.....what are you all thinking???

Triggering the brixit process shouldn't even be contemplated until such time that we have in place a clear and well thought out exit strategy. The absolute worst thing we could do is start a process only then have to start making u-turns because of ill thought out rushed decisions.

I have sought reassurance from Liam who assures me that any negotiations won't take place until December at the earliest....

Fully agree, one of my votes went to informal talks with EU countries as a first step, but no Brexit until we are certain we can get what we want. The last thing we need is another half ar***d negotiation like Cameron's, this time exit has to be on our terms or else........

Point taken but, the question was "What should the PM do first" and the sub heading was "Concentrate on triggering the the Brexit process, yes you are correct it would be foolhardy to implement Article 50 straight away but as the question asked she and her cabinet should be concentrating on the subject.

I read in the papers this morning that 'Whitehall have already confirmed a list of 10 economic powerhouses including India, China, Japan, Australia and Canada have already committed informally to forming strong trade links with the UK'.
If we can develop these links prior to invoking Article 50 it leaves us with a very strong hand in any negotiations with the EU, or so I would have thought, especially if we can cut out much of the red tape the EU seems to insist upon (in order to find work for their over-populated cache of civil servants!!).

I heard that a week ago, Foxy, but I also read this morning that we wouldn't be allowed to form any trade agreements until after we had left the EU. If this is true, it seems to me to be another piece of bureaucracy that has no resemblance to common sense and is another (for me) reason why we need to get out and fend for ourselves

Ok Ray...squeak! squeak!...perhaps l should have "concentrated" a little harder....However l think the thread/sub heading are open to interpretation therefore shall we just blame Sir Merv for not making it clear?

I'm sure our PM is concentrating on most of the options put forward by Sir Merve but my preference was for ' Striking new trade deals outside the EU' as l believe this is crucial if we want to put ourselves in the best negotiating position when finally getting to the nitty gritty of a favorable Brixit deal.

Snap Foxy... l had intended posting this earlier (between rests from cutting the hedge)......but cut through the cable so have only just got round to posting it.

Can anybody explain the logic behind restrictive trade practices which hinder genuine trade but, as an example, allows China to offload steel into the EU to the detriment of home nations' own steel producing industries?
Peerhaps some of the rules on trade need re-visiting..............

Hi Foxy.....you've probably already read this article but just in case...

http://www.politico.eu/article/eu-shift ... ith-china/

I think near none restrictive trade deals that China etc enjoy could become a major headache as we go it alone in a global market place. We could find ourselves in the same scenario as us thinking the EU need us more than we need them?. Put the shoe on the other foot and we will undoubtedly need our global markets more than they need us which could leave us more susceptible to having to accept less than favorable trading deals?

Not sure the above is logical foxy but it's the best l can muster up at this time of night "Oops" morning.

a lot of countries impose import tariffs to protect their own workers from being out of a job due to cheaper/better products coming in
the US is a prime example of this, in they way they protect their car and steel industries from foreign competition.
The Chinese and Japanese , who control 8 out of 10 of the worlds biggest bank, also use this to ensure their workmen build their off shore banks at that as much material from China and Japan is used in the construction of any project on foreign shores, such as ship yards airports etc
Also the Chinese regulate their economy depending on how much foreign currency they need, also they control around 80% of the rare earth metals on the planet, which are used in most if not all electronic apparatus, so imposed tariffs and import duties are nothing new
we need everyone else to give us a reasonable trade deal , as they need us to buy their products, so adding on tariffs and duty defeats the object for everyone concerned
