Phoning in France

Unread post by CaroleF »

I'm very ignorant about using a mobile in France - the last time we were in France mobiles had not long been in use and we didn't have one. We will be in France soon for our holiday and I have a Vodafone mobile. If I want to call a French number when I'm in France which numbers do I use - for example if I am given a number like - +33 (0) 123456789 which of the initial numbers do I use? Can anyone help please?

If you are calling anywhere from a UK mobile, you need to dial as if from the UK so +33 in front of the number to call a French number. If you hold the 0 button whilst dialling, it will automatically put the + in front of the code for you

Thank you QB. Very helpful. Had looked on the internet but there were lots of confusing answers.

Not forgetting that if you are phoning home, it's +44, then drop the leading zero, so if you were to phone me it would be +44 117 xxx xxx, not +44 0117 xxx xxxx

Don't think that is correct, if you are using a UK mobile then you just pick the number from your contacts list and dial just as you would at home. You only need to use the country codes for foreign numbers, or if you use a foreign phone or sim card.

Yes, my 'phone automatically adjusts the number in the contact list to use the correct code when it is dialled from abroad

Maybe I had wrong settings but when I dialled a number from my contacts list I couldn't get through and had to redial adding +44, then edit all my contacts
