Football thread 2016/2017

Unread post by qbman1 »

Much as it pains me, I suppose we ought to get the new season's thread going !

I know I have been rattling on for ages about the way the game has been ruined by money but is it just me that thinks the figures being bandied around for Paul Pogba are quite ridiculous ?

Apart from the transfer fee, which would buy a house for about 350 of us (!) his reported "salary" of about £900,000 A MONTH is more than most of us have earned in a lifetime !

Who says football is in touch with the common man ?!

According to Jeremy Corbyn who told us yesterday that the average price of a house is £350,000 it would only be for 30 of us!!! Clearly JC opens his mouth and 'owt flies out!!'

Back on topic I wonder what the odds on us winning the Prem again are? Somehow I think it was a one off.
Transfer fees and salaries are obscene but you have to ask who is to blame. Clearly it must be the TV rights and for as long as people are prepared to pay for Sports TV then they will see it as a viable proposition. In that respect TV viewers must be the ones to blame for fanning the flames. You can't really blame the players who will be looking for the best deal they can get but loyalty such as Le Tissier's at Southampton and more recently Deeney at Watford (who turned down a lucrative contract at Leicester to remain at Watford) is hard to find. We offered Kante £100k a week and a season in the Champion's League to stay with us but he turned it down for Chelsea who will be paying him £150k. I could never imagine earning that much money.

Point of order - 30 x £350,000 is only £10,500,000 but the transfer fee being talked about is £100 million so I still reckon that would buy 300 of us a house.

That's what happens when you use a Mickey Mouse calculator!!!!

£350,000? just goes to show what fantasy land some of these MPs live in. There are some decent terraced houses up here going for £85k but clearly would not be good enough for some of our kids. I sometimes wonder if there is actually a housing shortage or a shortage of houses worthy of those looking to buy them. Even so, £100 million for one footballer is heck of a lot of money, especially when you think how some of the clubs in the lower divisions struggle on a day to day basis just to survive.

Footy Press type predictions for relegation are ...

Hull City, Middlesbrough, Burnley .... plus Watford.

What a load of tosh, Leicester more like

No Mob, hopefully they've got that wrong. How are we going to pick up six easy points if you get relegated?

Claudio's target for this season - 40 points to avoid relegation. Simple!!! The rest is a bonus or, as my T shirt says

Having lost ' Big Sam ' I guess Sunderland need adding to the ' drop ' list.

Along with Middleborough and Hull is my bet.

The Foxes and Hornets will be battling it out for 10th place

Big Sam's first eleven will be interesting as a comparison to that which Roy put out. I wonder if he will continue Roy's policy of playing everybody out of position and choosing out of form players.
Let's start with Joe Hart and his dandruff.....................

Foxy live the dream mate, when Forest won the Championship (Div. 1 then) the pundits were saying they were a flash in the pan and although they never won the league again they had several League Cup wins and dare I mention two back to back European Cups.

As Cubie says the game is out of control finance wise these days and that is why I don't go through the turnstiles anymore. I think that football should be run similar to ice hockey where only so many imports are allowed by each team.

Today Nottingham Forest legend Viv Anderson will be honoured at Trent University, he was the first black player to play for England.

Interesting to see that Burnley, winners of the £100 million pound end of season play offs are investing £10.8 million in a new state of the art training ground and a youth team programme, nice to see a bit of the wealth being spread about and being used to help clubs for the future

PS £100 million for any player is disgusting, lets be honest they play football coz they is too thick to do owt else ;-)

According to Ian Holloway Hudds Town are second favourites for relegation, he's not the best pundit on TV so lets hope he is wrong.

After what happened last year I wouldn't believe a word the pundits say and as the season gets going you suddenly realise what a load of absolute tosh they speak. They all have their favourites who will always be up in the top four whilst their less fashionable clubs will always struggle.
However it is the unpredictability of football which makes it so exciting and so fascinating.

The forecast for Gillingham FC is smack bang mid-table

I wouldn't be surprised at that, maybe a little higher if we can manage to hang on to Bradley Dack until January.

The season starts Saturday by the way

Away at Sarfend for us.

Will be happy if Aldershot manage mid table although Playoffs would add bit of money end season!

I'm off to Barrow on Saturday - our longest journey. 5 & half hour journey plus stops on supporters coach! Cant wait!

All that matters is Stoke City finish above West Ham so I get my pint from my brother.

I had it for two years then lost it last year when West Ham's performance improved after they dumped Sam!

(Good luck England then!)
