Hope the entertainment improves for you barney. We only went to two shows, that was enough. The first was a four man singing thingy called Troubadour, a bit like the Overtones but a hundred times worse. The second was some old brass called Mandy Muden who was supposed to be a mind reader come magician come comedian. She was dire, she must have paid P&O to come on board

Oh dear - I was really looking forward to the entertainment on Aurora in a month's time. That has really put a damper on things.

Have just read about serious wildfires affecting Funchal in Madeira and 3 dead. I don't know how to do attachments but it is on the BBC News page. I think you probably called in there during your cruise. Maureen

Yes we did. Had a great day as well. Shuttle bus into town, then struck lucky with Carlos (taxi) who took us (4) everywhere all morning in his very comfortable Merc people carrier including the basket run and a different cable car and then dropped us back at the ship for 20 Euros each. Of course we had to pay for the basket run and cable car separately, but still a bargain. There was no rush wherever we stopped and he would advise us not to buy drinks at certain places because they were expensive. Weather was lovely, no fires. This cable car got my heart racing a bit though due to the extremely steep decent. Bl**dy high as well

Ours is a 'Music Festival at Sea' cruise Stephen, so we'll be getting a bit of cultcha

I'm expecting a dodgy ventriloquist performing while playing the cello

We've seen good everything from fantastic to OMG ,so we just take it as it comes

We are pretty well Headlinered out now, so don't mind if we miss those shows.

I'd reckon over the years, the worst I'd seen was a guy called David Copperfield who used to be on TV with Lenny Henry and Tracy Ullman in the seventies.
Unfortunately, so was his act.
When he stripped off to do Max Wall I thought, that's enough for me.

I seen a firm called Happy Tours who do a half day trip for only 15 euros

May give that a go if it still exists.

The Nuns' Valley is interesting. Little more than 30 years ago they had no electricity. Now they have a better mobile signal than we get at home.

For me the best bit is to visit Eira do Serrado, which has fabulous views down into the valley. I'm sure most if not all tours go there as part of the trip.

Most also stop at Picos dos Barcelos which has great views over Funchal and from where you can watch your ship depart if you're late back!

We were taken to a viewing platform way way up in the hills. A bit nerve racking when you go to stand on the metal grid viewing platform overhanging the cliff. Even more butt clenching when you walk over the glass panels

Its a great trip, or at least it was with the death defying drops etc when we did many years ago but the best part was the chinchinyo - ish ( local cherry brandy ).

There is quite a story to go with the Valley, very interesting or so we thought.

The road into the valley itself is now a tunnel with quite a slope on it!

You can see a tunnel going into the hill from the port, if that is the one you mean Merv.
