David creates forum in 6 days (that's faster than God)
David
Thanks again for putting so much work into this forum and I think it's fair to say we're all amazed how good it is and how quickly you've pulled together so much. I'm guessing there is a standard platform that forums like this are able to use but, even so, you must have put a lot of effort into getting to this point.
I was interested therefore in how, and when, you started and how long you've spent on it so far.
By my estimation a few of us first started trying to contact you last Wednesday (the 16th) to take up you on a suggestion you made a while back about setting up a new/interim forum. You then emailed us back Friday morning (18th) to say it was all set up and ready to go, which is pretty damn good going by anyone's standards.
However, I notice from the members list that you actually joined the forum yourself on the 12th, which is still an amazing turnaround given how good the forum is, but suggests you may have already started setting up then. Or was it just registered then in anticipation.
Either way I'd be interested in how you got it to this point and when. Call it our Bible if you like !

Excellent work...but it does beg the question how P&O can't run one with a professional IT dept.

Not being an IT techie I'm astounded and ever so slightly in awe at how quickly David's created this forum and got it all working so well. It's so nice to be back in contact with everyone again
If there's anything I can do to ease your little Smurfie workload give me a shout, but bear in mind the opening words of this post

I think you should all just stay with this one but try to get P&O to adopt it somehow, the originator needs some moderators who know PEOPLE & FORUMS they need to recognise problems.

Not for me to say, up to the owner of the forum. I was commenting on qualifications not individuals, it needn't be a cruiser but someone who knows the people involved would help..or would that make it worse?Dark Knight wrote:and who would you reccomend John?

I'm willing to help too Smurfie but like Debs I'm an IT phobe. Anything else though and you're more than welcome.
Just a thought, I could be your agent for when P&O come knocking - I could try and get you a good deal

I just posted here but don't know where it's gone! Anyway congratulations on the setting up of this forum. Given it is a big company, I haven't been able to understand why P&O have had so many problems with the Cruise Community forum. Should this forum be adopted by P&O in my opinion I think that a moderator should not be personal friends with other members because I think that objectivity and impartiality could be difficult to achieve and there may be instances of favouritsm. In any case, a moderator should apply the rules and t&c's to everyone, with no exceptions such as I have witnessed elsewhere.

Re: David creates forum in 6 days (that's faster than God)
I think at the moment the moderator of this forum is the owner and the person who put it together. He has been a member of the P&O community for a number of years, and I would have thought he has made many friends who are members of this site over the years.
I have no trouble in accepting he would be completely impartial in his moderating the site, if I did not think so then maybe I would not be posting here.
At the moment I am just thankful he has provided this forum for us to use, than to worry how it is moderated, if it is adopted by P&O or not, and if and only if P&O were to take the site over, then they would continue to moderate it as they have done in the past

I think P&O would be the worst option as Mods, they made a mess of all the other incarnations. Faceless IT people who don't know people. Mods from the membership would be best I think.

Re: David creates forum in 6 days (that's faster than God)
I trust Smurfy to moderate fairly and objectively
I have seen moderators on other cruise related sites who wield their status like a club and ban people for no good reason, other than the fact they can and also harrass people via PM's about which cruise sites they frequent, nobody wants that sort of half wit moderating anything
Thankfully Smurfy is even handed and wise to the ruses employed by trolls, so like Derek, I feel it should be left to Smurfy to approach who he feels best equiped to moderate, rather than wannabees touting for the job
Smurfy DO NOT ASK ME

I'm with Delboy on this one.
If everybody abides by the rules of the site you don't need a moderator but if anyone steps outside those rules I trust Smurfy to take appropriate action.
Let us all enjoy what is an excellent site and give it the respect it deserves.

Re: David creates forum in 6 days (that's faster than God)
I am not touting for the job, nor casting any doubts upon the fairness of 'smurfie', I am merely offering my thoughts/opinions on posts that have been made. Someone hoped that the forum might be adopted by P&O and asked who the moderator might be. It is easy to say if everyone obeys the rules there shouldn't be a problem but in practice, and in my personal experience - not everyone obeys the t&cs to the detriment of others and rules are broken but no action taken. I hope that this forum will be different.

Well said DK I agree 100%
David created this site ( and a damn fine job he has done ) it is his decision how it moves forward and we all have the choice if we stay or leave if we don't like how it is moderated.
Why on earth people are looking for problems that aren't there is beyond me, there are T&C and provided everyone is happy to abide by them the forum won't even need moderating ( as such )

Some people may be looking for problems but I am not one of them. I have already read a couple of posts which could be taken as contentious. It seems that some people have little intention of making a fresh start. We shall see. One can only comment in relation to one's personal experience, but if posts remain objective rather than subjective there should be no problems.

I would ask posters to read item (c) of the forum rules terms and conditions, which can be found at the top of this forum.

The Members overall are, imo, absolutely delighted with this site and will not sit by and watch trouble makers attempting to disrupt the harmony in any way shape or form.
A Moderator needs a little wisdom, a sense of justice and plenty of common sense ... the Smurf gets my vote and any assistance that I may personally be able to offer him.
