Loose change

Unread post by anneed »

Just been reading about coins in circulation that can be worth much more than their face value. I don't have any of the really valuable ones but do have a couple of 1973 'clasped hands' 50p coins that were issued to mark our entry into the Common Market. Checked on e-Bay and they seem to be worth around four times their face value with claims this will increase post-Brexit.

Don't suppose there will be one to mark our exit. But if there were it could show the small hand - that was always said to be the Queen's - waving farewell (no, NOT giving the V for victory!). What a collector's item that would be...

What gems do you have in your coin collections?

Like you ,I read the same article and checked my change. I found a Peter Rabbit 50pence piece. Time will tell if it's worth more than face value.

They are on ebay at £20 upwards Colin.

A few weeks ago the lady who works in our newsagents mentioned the Peter Rabbit 50p's to my husband and when he looked in his pocket he had one so it is safely put away now, I don't know how many were minted but I don't think it was a lot.

We have a large jar full of pre 1917, plus another one with pre 1947, silver coins of the Realm ... my old Mum collected them for donkey's years but I have never had the heart to encash them.

ps ... I did overhear somebody saying that the Rampant Rabbit one's are worth the most :shh:

Strange that this subject should come up, the other week I was sorting the loft (Aladdin's Cave) out and I found my referee kit bag so I had a look through all the pockets and there was one of my notebooks from years ago and in it were three of the original pound notes which was my match fee. Also in the bag was a Victorian penny that I always used to toss at the start of the game.

I don't know if the pound notes are worth anything and the penny is up in my workshop now so I will go up and check it tomorrow.

I also have coins and notes from countries that do not use them anymore like Yugoslavian dinar, German marks, Austrian schilling, French francs the list is endless but I bet they are worthless now.

On the subject of coins I was shocked to find out that some British coins are now made out of base metal, I have a large magnet I retrieved from an old motor and use it for sifting brads and screws from sawdust and shavings on the floor. Not long ago the magnet was sat on one of my benches with a few screws stuck to it, as I walked by the bench the magnet grabbed hold of my trouser pocket frightening the life out of me, it was the coins in my pocket that attracted it.

It is mostly about condition with British coinage, unless they are very old or vary rare. The stuff that comes out of your pocket rarely attracts that much of a premium. The serious collectors always want uncirculated or proof condition

You should have spent most of that tat before 1972 !

You might get a few pence for some of them on eBay if you have the time and patience !

I did that yesterday. I took some holiday £££ from a cash machine and then dropped it and the wind took over! Now I'm 30 quid down but someone will appreciate it.

If you have some coins or notes that you think might be worth something why not go along to a branch of the British Association Of Numismatic Societies.

The link should reveal a branch near you.

And I've got a Peter Rabbit 50p now. Blimey the things must be common as muck and I can't believe they're worth £20.

Talking of money - who will be first to lay hands on one of the new fivers? And next year we've got the new 12-sided pounds. Must be costing a tidy sum changing all the machines that take money.
