SAD Winter Blues

Does anyone suffer from SAD (seasonal affective disorder) ?, my wife Cheryl does and it makes a marked difference in her attitude towards life. From today Autumn Equinox the days start getting shorter and I notice a gradual change in Cheryl as the nights get longer she is definitely a summer person and says she would hibernate for the winter if it was at all possible.

This is why we take most of our holidays in the Autumn and Winter months so Cheryl can get her sun fix and a warmer climate. She suffers from vitamin D deficiency and has to take tablets for it but as we all know vitamin D is produced by the skins exposure to the sun.
If only the doctor could prescribe 3 months in the Caribbean as a cure.

I do! Already I am slowing down, getting more tired, lethargic, more anti-social and somewhat weepy. Plus I crave carbs in winter which isn't good for weight. And this winter we have no sunshine holidays booked, but I think we shall have to find something - trouble is we don't like the Canaries and don't want the expense of long haul, as that means Business Class flights.

I don't think I have that Ray, but I love the warm, sunny weather and cannot get enough of it.

I loathe the Winter and absolutely hate being cold.

I eat differently in the summer with loads of salads and tend to lose a fair bit of weight.

Come the winter, I struggle to get up and tend to lock myself away a little bit.

Come retirement, we are considering downsizing dramatically house wise, maybe even buy a small flat that's easy to lock up and leave, and shoot off to the sun for the winters.
Depart at the end of October, return early May.
Maybe we will buy a place abroad but more likely just long term rent, and move from country to country.
My brother is moving to Monserrat in the Caribbean in November so we'll see how that goes.

I'm sure I don't have it in any serious debilitating sense but I certainly hate the shortening days. It used to be worse when I was working and I went in the dark, spent all day indoors and then came home in the dark. At least now we're retired so we can get out and enjoy some daylight hours. It's also why, some years ago, we bought our first timeshare week in Madeira in February, to break up that long dismal run from Christmas to Easter.

It used to be worse when I was working and I went in the dark, spent all day indoors and then came home in the dark. At least now we're retired so we can get out and enjoy some daylight hours. It's also why, some years ago, we bought our first timeshare week in Madeirain February, to break up that long dismal run from Christmas to Easter.

Should we ever decide not to go we would!

And given that the superb one-bedroom apartment with separate living room and two bath/shower rooms costs us about £350 a week, compared to over £600 for a standard hotel room in the same building, I reckon that would be a pretty good mate's rate!

However, don't hold your breath. We've not got tired of going yet!

I am so bad, that I look up the sunset and sunrise times from December 21st. Where we are the darkest morning is 4th January, and the sunrise doesn't get earlier than 8.00am until January 19th. I would love to book a sunshine cruise each year, but Sue wont leave the house in winter, because we have no one to look after the it. Even in the softie south we can get quite hard frosts.

Cheryl used to hate the drive to work and back in the dark and sometimes had to travel out of Nottinghamshire which she used to dread, but now we are both retired she at least doesn't have to travel now.

I'm sure you have, Raymondo, but have you invested in some of those daylight lamps for your Cheryl. We find they are very good and produce a much whiter light
