Christmas Eve is plenty early enough to put the decorations up.

The mind boggles! We will not be having decorations, or a culinary blow out. Our only family are going away for Christmas again, and we shall be Darby and Joan. I like to go to at least one carol service to try and catch some Rutter, and hopefully a performance of The Messiah, then if the weather is fine it will be a bracing walk on Christmas day. Sue doesn't like Christmas.

Sorry folks' it all sounds a bit 'bah humbug' at Manning Towers.

Not at all, Frank, while I enjoy the presents and the Lady C's superb Christmas dinner, the whole thing is way too commercialised and I wouldn't mind if we didn't do it. So feel free to join me and Stephen in a hearty round of "hah bumhug"

Thank you for starting this thread Gill, I was hoping someone would have the nerve to -I knew the men would hate it. I've started Christmas preparations by doing the one thing I said I would never do - I've bought an imitation Christmas tree! There is a reason. Firstly I am having real problems with one of my knees - have a Consultant's appointment next week and my GP thinks it will mean a knee replacement - and I'm too young - well I think I am! Next thing is we have two cruises booked, one for 10 nights on Aurora in December to cover my 'special' birthday, returning on 16th December and one we had already booked to the Canaries going on 2nd January. I don't think, even if I have to have a replacement knee that it will be done until we return from the January cruise - the recovery time is too great even if I had it done late this month, to be fine to go on Aurora on 6th December. I can manage perfectly well on a cruise ship as I can please myself how much I walk and I will also be taking my small scooter with me - yes I'm going to become one of those irritating people scooting around - well hopefully only on shore.

So all things considered I thought there's no way I'm going to organise getting a real tree up and decorated before 6th December, then leave it until 16th December without adding any water and then after Christmas we'd have to get it down and packed away before 2nd January. So I started looking around and discovered a sale on at an American company who now sell over here and they provide trees for lots of tv sets. I thought if I'm going to have an artificial tree I don't want to pretend it's real so I've bought one that has sort of snow frosting on it. It's also pre-lit so all I have to do is to open the stand, put the bottom section in place, plug it in, lights come on and then as the other sections are clicked into place their lights come on too! It looks great on the video so I hope it will be. Of course it does mean I'm having to buy some new baubles as I need ones that will look good with the snow effect, some of mine are fine but I do need some silvery ones too! John doesn't know about this yet - it will be a nice surprise for him! He will be pleased he doesn't have to come to choose a tree - I'm very fussy - and he won't have to cart it indoors, get it onto its stand and argue with me about how many bottom branches need to come off in order to get it into its stand - so I'm doing him a favour really!

Haven't thought about food - the Ocado date for booking Christmas slots is a week tomorrow would you believe and as I do my main shopping through them I will have to think about it. Don't know what we are doing for Christmas yet, the girls haven''t mentioned it. I think they know it won't be me doing all the cooking this year - so I wait to be told.

I've always loved Christmas and looking forward to it and planning is half the fun.

and the first word is "drop".

Cubie was, of course, talking about what happens to the needles on real trees.

Weren't you, Cubie?
