Good opportunities to view the space station this month if the skies clear.

I expect they're getting good views of that hurricane that's devastating the Carribean. I'm waiting to hear from my son in Orlando - last heard they'd been ordered to stay indoors.

Apparently there were 340,000 homes without power there

Re: International Space Station
I didn't realise it was that many. I saw a notification stating that everyone had to charge their mobile phones while there was still power - but surely the transmitter masts would need power in order to relay any calls?
Wouldn't you need binoculars or a telescope to see the ISS clearly (other than as a small white light crossing the sky)?

Just heard from my son - the hurricane has passed Orlando and they're safe, with no damage to property.

It's quite a big, bright light but, yes, you do need external help to see more than thatSilver_Shiney wrote:I didn't realise it was that many. Re: International Space Station
Hello qbman, I love to watch the space station fly over, I'm signed up to get the alerts and whenever its a clear night I'm out in our garden watching it, I don't think I'll ever get bored seeing it. This week so far it was only visible on Tuesday night as every other night its been too cloudy where we are, fingers crossed the weather will be better tomorrow night.qbman1 wrote:Good opportunities to view the space station this month if the skies clear.

I too like tracking the ISS.
In the mid-Atlantic in May, we had a speaker who was an Astologer. He gave a talk late one night out on deck. The Captain had the deck lights extinguished and he pointed out the various constellations using a laser. While watching the sky, we saw the ISS and about a dozen satellites passing in the opposite direction. It was fascinating.

I do indeed mean Astronomer. I wasn't "all there" having had horribly sad news about a family member yesterday afternoon, and was seeking a distraction, so obviously didn't concentrate properly.Silver_Shiney wrote:Don't you mean "astronomer", Gill?
Apologies and feel free to correct.

Re: International Space Station
It's safe in the hands of an expert ! He was pointing it at the stars, not a bloody passing aircraft !
