New passport

Unread post by anneed »

I wasn't in a particular hurry to renew my passport but noticed it expired next June so I thought I'd apply early as you do hear of applications taking an age to process. The renewal form was posted Friday so I was astonished to find the brand spanking new one on my doormat just five days later. And the following day the old one came back. What good service.

But has anyone else had a horrible shock on seeing their new passport photo? I popped a fiver into one of those booths having carefully applied make-up, styled hair etc (come on ladies you know you all do this!) and waited to see my perfect piccie. What a fright. I know it's nearly Hallowe'en but it had aged me about 50 years!! I recently met someone else who had the same disappointment and seriously wondered if it was a deliberate ploy by the photo people to make us put more money in to try to get a more flattering snap.

Of course few of us look our best without a smile - and the machine says NO if you attempt the slightest smirk - but really. Or do we all just fool ourselves into thinking we look younger than we do?

Jane and I both had our new passport photos done by the photographer in our village.
He used his digital camera and took dozens until we were happy with them.

Without doubt, the best we've ever had. Soft focus and photoshop used.

Who says the camera never lies eh!
I look like a cross between Paul Newman and Richard Gere

We use a local camera shop which does passport photos, and hence you get to see the images before they go to print. It costs only about a pound or so more than the dreaded automatic photobooths, and we had a choice of several images before printing. It took virtually no longer than using a photobooth, and we had no problems.

We have always used a local photography shop in the past and always been happy with the result but as my passport needed renewing and I couldn't be bothered to go into town I popped into Tesco as they have a photo shop, I wasn't expecting it to be great but was pleasantly surprised, I think the cost was £7 for 6 photo's ( although you are only given 4 ) I think the biggest shock with passport photo's is having to admit you've aged since the last one :o

Aged, Jo? Surely not! You're merely celebrating the nth anniversary of your 29th birthday!

Same here, there are a number of free sites on the web where you can upload one of your own photos, and they will automatically crop and create a passport size photo for you to download and print off.
That way you can choose one where you look your best, even if not quite as good as George Clooney.

It's easy enough to crop and resize yourself!

One thing for sure I'll be glad when everyone has got an E-passport and has got used to using the E-scanners, I can't believe the amount of people who are either in the wrong que or don't know how to use the scanners.
Despite clear signs there has been chaos on my last three visits to the airport, I shudder to think what these people would do in an abandon ship or plane situation.

When I had to renew my passport a few weeks ago I discovered that we could take the photo and then upload it to the passport site - this must be fairly new as it wasn't the case when John renewed his last June. Anyway John took a photo of me with a cream, plain background in our dining room and uploaded it - dreadful photo, me unsmiling, looked like a Wanted poster! It was all duly submitted, paid for on line and about a week later new passport arrived followed a few days later by my old one. All extremely efficient - now why can't P&O be efficient like that!
