Never fear, Mr Keith Sir, Gill doesn't seem to realise that you don't need shops full of Christmas tat to be able to buy Christmas presents before December. As DP rightly says, it helps build the excitement for the miniature peoplettes if the decorations and the general hype doesn't start weeks/months in advance. The Lady C used to do her Christmas shopping in January - how organised is that? It does help to avoid all the considerable stress of navigating through the panicking hordes in the run-up to the big day!! The "Christmassy things" are then available at a much lower cost than in the run-up. Common sense, anyone? :sarcasm:

Hi Mr Shiney...

DP may be blind but he arguably has more vision than most when it comes to how Christmas has been hijacked. I see nothing wrong with people getting prepared for Christmas, however, the dressing up of shops with tinsel, fairy lights, and Santa's as early as October/November is to my mind just commercial exploration and is something that should be banned....but please don't tell our lovely ladies I've said that :shh: squeak squeak.

Well....... Surprisingly...I actually do think the shops should wait till.......1st of November..or scrap Halloween....
It does my head having Halloween stuff and Christmas stuff out at the same time !!

As for shopping early in the year..I tend to mislay all the stuff I buy or give it away to someone.
This year in May, I found 3 tubs of Roses in the bottom of a wardrobe.

There's no room for principles in the modern retail trade. A soon as one company puts out their Christmas range, all the others have to do likewise, or they lose out on their share of the market. So it's a continual race to see who can get theirs out first and steal a march on the competition.

I suppose it would be too much like common sense to have a rule across the industry to set a fixed date on which everyone puts their Christmas stuff out...

Indeed, Meg. Besides, starting the preparation at a more sensible date heightens the anticipation for the children without stopping the parents from buying pressies and food.

Perhaps the parents should mentioned that little thing to the children first before presents. Now let me think, what was it, oh yes, the TRUE meaning of Christmas!

Your not alone Sue I have that problem with Cheryl, I was sorting some cupboards out a couple of years ago and found things she had stashed away for Christmas in previous years, the most amazing one was a sparkly dress which she had bought for our granddaughter. The age on the hanger stated 4/5 years but when I found it our little princess was now 13, there were several diaries about 6 years out of date too but unfortunately no choccies for Ray to tuck into.
Fortunatley the dress came in handy as a present for another little girl in the family, but Cheryl wasn't impressed with old tightwads suggestion of waiting until the days and dates correspond again on the diaries and just change the year.

You mean you didn't try and find the receipt to take it back for a refund Ray ;)

What boring farts you lot are!!
Kids only have the magic of Christmas for a few years....let them enjoy it. Yes..let them understand it's not all about the receiving of gifts. It's peace and goodwill to all men...being extra nice to people... family & friends time... try to help those less fortunate ..
.....pantos, parties, carol singing, visits to see Santa..Christmas trees..sparkly lights...
Yes I know it's not like that for everyone...yes I know all the negative stuff..
BUT....for goodness sake...Embrace life ...have fun....Be young again.

As for the religious side (each to their own on that bit).
Practice what is relevant to you.

If you don't want to participate in any of it...so be it, but don't put a downer on everyone's else's preparations.

Who said anything about not letting kids enjoy Christmas? By adopting a more common-sense, pragmatic approach, it heightens the enjoyment and excitement. Really young children don't understand why they have to wait 8+ weeks for the Big Day.

try to help those less fortunate

Sue I was one of those less fortunate kids, I have not always had money and often went without meals never mind presents, I think kids get far too much at Christmas these days and I don't think it is doing them any favours. My Christmas was a sugar mouse, an apple and a cheap toy all hung up in one of my school socks and the best present I ever got was a second hand Meccano set, we loved Christmas.

Oh I see, you were one of those spoilt kids Ray. I just got a piece of coal, and that was after it had been partially burnt to help to stop ice forming on the windows...inside. :)
