Drinking water for Barbados
In an effort to combat the drought in the Caribbean a test run of delivering water from South America takes place this week. Looking at it , if it works , would go part way to alleviate the shortage of water now being felt across the Caribbean.

In the longer term, given that the Caribbean is well known for being surrounded by rather a lot of water, a desalination plant or two would seem a good idea

I think they are on the case:
"Since 2007, 68 new desalination plants have been built across the Caribbean"

Yes , they are building desalination plants. But like us who breed lamb for the table, and find it cheaper to import from Australia, they are thinking it will be cheaper to drag bags of water from South America than produce it through desalination.
If it works the plants will be there as a back up, and the cheaper water from S/America could be the main source for drinking etc.
