Well the Panasonic sound base arrived today, and is going back tomorrow. Rubbish sound, bass!, what bass. Like towny, I followed the instruction manual and tried all manner of settings and still the kna*kered TV speakers sounded better

Off tomorrow to a Boss outlet to listen to the Solo 15 series II providing they have one set up for demo purposes.
At £329 from Amazon it should sound better.
I doubt it Foxy.

Went to a Bose centre this morning and the shop bod couldn't even demonstrate it properly with the remote. All I got was a fixed loop demo which didn't impress one little bit. Personally I felt Bose is overrated. Oh well another one ticked off.

Now considering my third option, a Canton DM55 sound base.
This also gets mixed reviews on Amazon and it's over £300, almost as much as a special offer TV.
I do hope you find something you like Stephen but at these prices I definitely would expect to hear every bit of dialogue without it sounding a bit weird, and from all the reviews I read nothing has been invented yet that will satisfy me.

I agree John. A mine field.

And no, the Canton doesn't seem to be fairing very well in the Amazon reviews. So I think I can cross that one off as well. Yes, I could go out and buy a new TV, and it wouldn't need to be a cheap one either to need something to improve the piddly small speakers they have these days.

Think I'll just buy a book :D

Actually we were watching a film last night and we had to give up on it. There was music in the (supposed) background and a woman muttering away. It was hard work telling what she was saying so we switched it off. What is it with film producers who allow background noise to dominate but it does seem to be fashionable? It's fine for them cos they have the script and can see what they are saying and whilst we don't expect BBC diction of the 50's we should at least be able to hear and follow the story.

The worst programs for background music/noise is Escape to the Country with 24hrs in A&E a close second. Drives me mad.

Not sure why programmes such as that need background music. I don't really know what it adds.

There's not a sound bar or base in the world that can make up for a lousy sound mix. What they can do is improve on lousy quality speakers in the tv, but that's not the same thing.

I find the background music on 24hs in A&E quite catchy, and it never seems intrusive to the commentary.
But I do agree with you Merv that if the sound engineer is a bit too heavy handed with the music, and too sparing on the dialogue volume, then no amount of high tech sound equipment is going to improve it.

I think Stephen will need to pay out a fortune on a Bang & Olufson TV if he wants something better than your average Panasonic, Sony or Samsung.
