I know Carol wanted to try and keep the forum topics cruise related, but i can't let the opportunity slip to say how much I am enjoying then tennis this year.

Have watched some fabulous matches so far with hopefully more to come.

What a summer if sport with the lions drawing the tests and cricket again on Friday.

I'm not into any sport but it certainly doesn't bother me if someone wants to start threads about it, I've always been of the opinion if it doesn't interest you then you don't have to read it .. rather like Brexit and Politics

Certainly enjoying Wimbledon this year....apart from the inane commentary from the usual suspects ( clue almost an anagram of 'any drivel' & the 'where there's a blame there's a claim' bloke). I have been particularly impressed with the ladies matches. There have been more rallies & less baseline slogging matches. Would like to see more doubles matches on tv. Seems to be some problems with the grass & not too impressed with the crowd cheering double faults.

I have particularly enjoyed the ladies matches which have seen some closely run contests, in particular Jo Konta who delights and exasperates in every point. Great win for her today although it was very much touch and go against a very talented Halep.
I love to see Federer play and hope he goes on to win the title. Sorry Scotland, but I have no time whatsoever for a certain person from up there although I see his brother is doing well in the doubles accompanied by Martina Hingis. I do enjoy watching doubles although I can't be doing with all the hand slapping after every won point -irritating and pointless.

I was hoping upon hope that Konta would do it but those Williams sisters are amazing and Venus was a deserved winner. She must now be favourite to lift the trophy.
Good match this evening with Kontinen and Watson going through although typically the BBC decided to wait until the final game in the final set to switch the match to the red button. By the time I found it the match was over!!! Well done BBC....................not.

No drink involved on this side of the net towny. However there are several references to hand slapping on Google but no reference to secret or personal codes.

However if anybody thinks they have deeper meaning that's fine by me.

I do like to watch the final stages but I found it a tad irritating this past week when I wanted to watch the BBC News at six o'clock only to find that they were screening bloody tennis on BBC1 / BBC2 and even on the World BBC ( 503 Sky channel ) as well

I'm just wondering, are spectators for the final at Wimbledon each year by invitation only or are the public allowed to apply for seats. The reason I ask is, you see every Tom, Di*k, Harry and his wife there, but I bet if jo public tried to get seats they wouldn't stand a chance.

there is a ballot sent round tennis clubs, so some are 'real' tennis folks.

I have no intention of going Meg, it just annoys me a bit that you see the same old mix of faces from politics through to celebs and their hangers on occupying the vast majority of the seats.

We get tickets through our tennis club. A couple of times we have had finals day centre. Travelling from the north we wouldn't risk taking tickets for an uncovered court. Having said that we have often queued for ground passes either the day before or the day after our main court ticket. We have had some great days with a ground pass. In week one you get loads of well known players on the outer courts and you get to see some really good matches. The down side of queuing in week one is that you usually have to be in the queue by about 6:30am! It's much easier to get a ground pass second week and you usually get some of the older players- last year we saw Jana Navotna & Martina Navratilova play...very good standard and not so much base line slogging.
Yesterday the ground passes were £8, I think but you would only get to watch the main match on the screen from the Hill.
There is a facility where ticket holders who leave early can hand their ticket in to be resold to people who already hold ground passes. I think the resale cost is £10. Monies raised from this goes to charity, I believe.
Yes, it is getting a bit of a celeb fest at times & I think Wimbledon is probably selling more ground passes these days than they did in the past but it is still a very rewarding experience.

I should add that ground passes are more expensive in week one ~ £20, I think.

I have had tickets in the past and used to enjoy going. Now we live in Wales you can't really do it in a day so incur the expense of a hotel as well.
