Which Camera

Thinking of treating me to a new camera maybe a bridge or DSLR as I love taking landscape pictures so would be great for our Fjords cruise. I do not want anything too heavy and do not want to carry round loads of different lenses, kit etc. I have read loads of reviews and various models from Canon and Panasonic Lumix come out well.

Anyone got any advice to a relative beginner?

If you dont want to carry around loads of different lenses I would discount a dslr and go for a better quality compact they can take just as good photos.

Hi Jenni,

I'm no expert - had a small camera which fitted in my handbag, but then I decided that I was fed up with it. The problem was that in places like Hawaii or on really sunny days I battled and struggled because the view finder was the screen, and I had sunlight glaring on the screen and couldn't see exactly what I was taking a picture of.

I got a new camera - a bridge camera by Fuji, and this gives me a choice of whether to view the shot when I am taking it either through the screen or using the eyepiece. Additionally it has a whole load of different auto settings - for portraits, sport, nighttime etc. The main thing I like about it is that it does the most tremendous landscapes - it takes 3 pictures to make a wide shot and the camera helps to line everything up, making it really easy.

So that's what I did. I find the Fuji is not too heavy, but it won't fit in a handbag and needs it's own camera bag (if you want to look after it).

Try going to a small independent camera shop - find what you like and then maybe compare prices for the make and model you want online.

I am a total novice with a camera but I bought a Panasonic DSLR G2 from a small shop locally.
It was the lightest one for the price compared to others they had in the shop. It takes good quality pictures.
There are lot of settings that you can adjust yourself or leave it on automatic and use like a point and press.
You will need to have a camera bag for it.
There are loads of tutorials on YouTube to help you with the manual side of things. I have a quick refresher on there before I go on holiday.

Whatever you buy I hope you get some cracking photo's.

A few years back I asked advice about a new camera on the old P&O board and got some excellent suggestions. In the end I opted for a Panasonic Lumix and have been very pleased with it. At the time my main issue was that I didn't want to carry around a video camera and a photo camera so wanted a stills camera that could take reasonable videos with a reasonable zoom ... and it had to be compact.

My niece is a professional photographer and she loves Canon (I think).

Best bet is probably to read as many reviews as possible

I have a Panasonic LX3, this high spec compact may not be the one for you but I would go for the Brand ... and the compact format if you want convenient quality, image and build.

Hi Jenni,

The one which I now keep in my handbag is a Lumix, and it is great because then I can have it with me during evenings on board - my daughter had the slightly earlier model to the one which I have got, but I missed out on some shots in really sunny locations because of looking at the screen as opposed to an eye piece viewfinder.

I have just bought a very cheap Canon A1300 from Amazon, with wide angle lens, 5X zoom and 16 mega pixels, to replace a similar 8 meg pixel Sony that recently failed, the cost of the Canon was very little more than the minimum repair estimate I had been given on the Sony. My main reason for choosing the Canon is that this model has an optical view finder as well the LCD screen, for a little over £80 including a case 8gb SD card and 4 Sanyo eneloop rechareable AA batteries I think its a bargain.
Only yesterday I downloaded my first photos onto my pc and was very agreeably surprised to note that the quality is as good if not better than with my more expensive Sony, I can certainly crop the pictures to the maximum without any noticable loss of definition. Probably not DSLR standard but perfectly adequate for my needs.

Everybody has there favourite makes whether it be cameras or anything else that we buy mine is Nikon with regards to cameras but there are a lot of very good cameras out there at the moment. Best thing is decide if you want a bridge or compact then decide a price and then compare products. Dont fall into the trap that the higher the meg pix the better the camera it doesnt work like that just look at spec of all cameras do and see if you would use them or not and then decide.

Thanks to you all, some intersting points of view - am now on internet comparing - it is a toss up between Canon and Panasonic - so am going to look at the features I will use (thanks Noddy10) and go from there. Will let you know what I decide.

Did the comparisions of both online (easy, peasy) and then popped out to shops to see them in flesh and try for weight - eventually decided the Pansonic was for me, so ordered the DMC - FZ200 which is being delivered today.

Booking a 1:1 introduction course in London - tailored to my camera, basic controls etc. i.e. how to get off of Intelligent Auto, also because I love scenery, flowers etc. we are going to St. James Park for part of the lesson to take some pictures - £125 weekends, £95 weekdays (10:30 -16:30) - Bargain!

So excited......

I have a Lumix DMC TZ30 and I love it, I spent a lot of money on it for a compact, but I now also have a Nikon D3100 which I equally love, but involves carrying around more kit. I took both on Oceana, the pic of my daughter in front of Oceana on the beach in La Palma came from the DSLR

Thank you for asking Jan. You a right it was freezing, I layered up plus hat, gloves, scarf and Uggs, but it was dry. The course was brilliant really nice guy and put to me at ease immediately. Showed me the controls of the camera I would never have used before . Explained the principles of taking great shots and OK so I cannot remember all of it, but it has made me aware of what can be done and given me the urge to learn more, so downloaded some tutorials and books, which if I hadn't done the course, would not have made sense! Taking camera with me to Wales this weekend and will hopefully get some practice in.

Nearly three months since purchasing my camera and loving it. Have found the most amazing training videos (foc) by a guy called Mike Browne, he is a brilliant teacher and I have learned so much and been putting it into practice. I now understand much more and have nearly mastered depth of field and macro photography. Got some great shots already.

I now want to get some practice on fast flowing water shots, ready for my Fjords cruise on 28 June, but not many waterfalls in Surrey

Does anyone know of any fast flowing streams, maybe over rocks, large pebbles etc. in the South East..?
