change of name
I must have missed news of the changes to Thomson Cruises, Dark Nights favourite,we should now refer the old Thomson cruise line as Marella Cruises , from Celtic meaning ‘shining sea’. The fleet will drop the Thomson prefix to the name, and all ships will be Marella Celebration etc, etc.

Interestingly Marella Discovery 2 (aka RCI Leged of the Seas) has been following us around the Canaries for the last few days

Re: change of name
A weird name maybe but it seems that they are going to base a number of ships in Asia ... a good plan imo.

Re: change of name
I have no idea why they did not just switch to TUI, the Thomson holidays now have that name and there is currently some heavy advertising to lift its profile, which the cruise line could have benefited from. Although the German cruise line is also named Tui, since all its ships are named Mein Schiff there does not seem to be much conflict there.

Re: change of name
I think it's because a lot of Thomson customers could get confused between the names Tui Celebration and Mein Schiff III

But then Domino's Pizza and Pepsi share the same colours so it could be Domino Dream or Pepsi Majesty ?!david63 wrote: 08 Nov 2017, 10:32They do have the Tui logo on the funnel and are painted in the Tui colourstowny44 wrote: 08 Nov 2017, 09:52I have no idea why they did not just switch to TUI, the Thomson holidays now have that name and there is currently some heavy advertising to lift its profile, which the cruise line could have benefited from. I don't understand why the admin doesn't add Marella Cruise to the Thompson heading or just rename the forum Marella. Nobody books a Thompson cruise anymore and even the travel agents use the name TUI instead. Not trying to stir things up just making a suggestion.

Re: change of name
Not related to Marella, but I had no idea that the ship now marooned in Belfast Villa Via Residences' Odyssey is the first ship I ever cruised on back in 2003, Fred Olsen's 'Braemar'. I'm surprised she's the sort of ship that would undertake a World Cruise. We loved our cruise but she's quite small and the cabins, even the suites aren't huge, although the Owner's Suite is certainly larger than many suites these days. According to the press the passengers can't stay on board overnight so many of them are going off on holidays elsewhere.

That was interesting Carole, didn't even think to go into its history.Gearbox and rudder problems holding her up I believe. Once repaired its on her way. Let's hope they get the fix corrected, any odd noise from within will have everyone hoping it's just old age.

Yes she's 32 years old. I'm not sure I'd be chancing buying a 3 year trip on her!

Re: change of name
It seems Marella who have always used older ships are now thinking of adding 2 brand new ships to their fleet
They put out a statement.....“Given an aging Marella Cruises fleet, we are currently exploring future options on positioning our highly profitable UK market leading business, including re-fleeting. We are in discussions for 2 vessels with new build slots tentatively available from FY31 onwards.“

Indeed Pompy, Fincantieri has two slots to build for delivery for 2031, 2032.
Tickets for the maiden voyage will go on sale tomorrow.
