Re: Hell hath no fury............
One question, since the offence took place in 2003 and both CH and VP managed to continue running successful business and political careers thereafter, what on earth possessed VP to take the actioin she did, which has now ruined both their careers.
Perhaps their stories might make other people faced with similar problems consider the outcome of their possible actions and take stock before they make a major problem a monumental catastrophe.

Hi Melsea,
Yes, you are absolutely correct - but one thing has made me 'wonder' about it all. You wrote that you thought that there were no winners in this whole sordid mess - but there are (albeit slightly hidden) winners.
Surely there are people in the various legal teams who have prospered because of this, and also people in the press too - and my question (sorry if it is a bit daft) is was VP encouraged to take the action she did by someone in the press etc who thought they could further their careers or improve their finances?
I don't suppose we will ever know - but it's a thought maybe.

Em, I think that is a very good point. I did read that Chris Huhne has already spent £250,000 trying to get it quashed before he then admitted his guilt. And I'm sure she has a large bill as well, but then maybe they also paid her huge sums to go to print. We;ll never know.
If there was no photographic evidence of who was driving, then perhaps he should have stuck to his guns that he wasn't driving. How do you prove it either way?
am I American? LOL - nope - not sure why you thought that. And I didn't say I WOULD take my other half's points, only that I would consider it. Not sure he would let me anyway.

The photographic evidence, probably won't be good enough to identify the driver. As VP took the points some time ago, there is a possibility that the photos have since been destroyed. However, there is or was an offence of failing to disclose the details of a driver. Huhne may have been better off taking the fine for that, not sure whether it carries any points with it, which what he was ultimately trying to avoid. Oddly enough, VP will come out worse off. Huhne plead guilty pre-trial (just), qualifying for a discount of his sentence. Be interesting to know whether she can get get re-dress for poor advice. Maybe she can just an extra chapter "The Holloway Years" to her book.

Good post Melsea, your lack of spiteful gloating at her comeuppance is nice to see.
Lioness, I wondered if you were American because of your use of 'Gimmee a break'. I scoured your previous posts to see if I had missed a 'son of a gun' or an 'Oh my Gaaad' but could find no further clues. My son once uttered 'Gimmee a break' but a stern talking to and a week on bread and water seemed to cure him.

Ahh thanks for that.
The thought had cross my mind if someone may have spurred her on since the passing of time does seem odd. People are never rational when they are upset or hurt and so I have never gone for tic for tac, although I wouldn't like to see the wrong side of me on a bad day. But age mellows one and life is too short, which is why I like cruising, what is to rush for.
Life is never that simple, just like a ball of string that's difficult to unravel, when you need to straighten something out, take it easy and it goes well, do it under stress you'll turn yourselves into more knots. I always liken that we are all on an 'Indiana Jones ride of life' never is anything how you expect it.

HK - ah that's why you thought it. Well I should perhaps have put it in quotes "Gimme a break", but I did live in Canada for 2 years in my early twenties and do sometimes still use the North Atlantic "gas" for fuel for the car which annoys my husband along with a couple of other North Atlantic-isms. Also, when working as a Flight Attendant, it did help with Americans if you used their words for things, as half the time they didn't understand what you were asking!HK phooey wrote:Good post Melsea, your lack of spiteful gloating at her comeuppance is nice to see.

Re: Hell hath no fury............
regarding this case - I have just read somewhere that Vicky Pryce was not in the car when the speeding camera got him. That makes a big difference in my mind. When I said I would consider taking my husband's points, I thought they meant that both people were in the car. As i said when it happened to us, we couldn't remember who was driving.
I think it makes a big difference if she was somewhere else at the time. Certainly don't think I would consider it in those circumstances.

Don't know why people get upset when people use an 'Americanism' phrase. My sister who lived in the states over 20 years and travels extensively there now and the world over has had to use her head on many occasions so as not to offend anybody. Also since our televisions have broadcasted for years American programmes we are very much used to hearing the language and yes it has infiltrated into our own culture. Unfortunately the Americans do not have a huge array of other countries programmes although they certainly have more than they used to and still they fail to understand us but we understand them perfectly. So I therefore like to say well done for being bi lingual in the language.
Back onto the subject, I see they passed sentence today. So Jean and everyone else, if there was no evidence to say who was driving what on earth was the CPS doing!!!. Think I read the report too quickly and missed that bit.

Well thank God those two monsters are behind bars tonight, I shall certainly sleep easier in my bed
Melsea, just because we are drip fed the hideous American 'culture' through our televisions, there is really no excuse to use their thicko expressions in real life. Shall we take it a step further and all talk at the tops of our voices wherever we may be? The only good thing about Americans is that they sometimes distract me from my dislike of Germans.
Lioness, spending 2 years in Canada at some point in your life is no excuse for saying 'gas' instead of petrol. If I were your husband I would fix you with a very hard stare when you did this. Please speak to Boris as she will advise you on how best to behave like a good wife and thus avoid the type of situation that led to this thread being started.

From the furore in the press over these two characters during the last few weeks, I'm amazed they only got 8 months. I now hear they could be out in four and, if they apply for home detention wearing a tag, they could be out even earlier.
Helen, following your comments regarding Americans and Germans (and some of my best Americans are friends), I must tell you there are two types of people I cannot stand: racists and the Portuguese.

And make a fortune on the book and the film rights - not to mention the TV appearances and the lecture tours....Silver_Shiney wrote:From the furore in the press over these two characters during the last few weeks, I'm amazed they only got 8 months. There's supposed to be a law about profiting out of one's crimes

I can quite understand why Jean sometimes lapses into using words or phrases which were encountered whilst living abroad - it's taken me ages to get straight, and even then I sometimes do it from time to time.
As to Meg's comment about profits from crimes - I reckon they are both going to try and made a quick buck from this. Because they have lived the high life knowing that they continued so to do having doing wrong, and have behaved in a totally arrogant manner I think that the sentences should have been longer, and I also think that they should be served in full. What sort of example does this set?
Oh well - time to look for another cruise methinks.

The thing about assumptions and stereotyping nations that it does rather muddy ones point of view. Americans are not in general anything like their portrayal on television anymore than we are anything like those on Coronation Street or Eastenders. Real people are 'normal' whatever that means.
Anyway Boris+ quite agree cruises at the ready....

Kaymar, old Degsy loves the Germans and the Yanks! There is nothing racist about disliking the Americans and the Germans, I am petitioning my MP to make it part of the national curriculum
Lioness, re your lapsing into a Canadian accent when talking on the phone to Canadian friends, I can identify with that. It used to happen to me when I came home from holidays in Ireland but strangely enough it stopped when I reached the age of 10
