we awoke to discover that we had frozen ice on all the East facing windows .... Brrrr !!!

I've just looked behind the curtains in our conservatory at the windows which also face east and we also have frozen ice on them (12.30 pm still there), When I nipped out there last night to check the door was locked I heard a 'gritty' sound hitting the windows but as it was freezing out there I didn't stop to have a look.

We should have had a refuse collection this morning but I assume the refuse men have been taken off the job in order to do the gritting and clear the roads in the town.

It has just started snowing again.

We had an Asda delivery on Tuesday and it was a minute earlier than expected! I said to the driver that I expected him to be late but he said he'd set off earlier than normal. Why can't other people figure this out?

A few years ago I worked in Russia at the back end of winter. It was -8 to -10 and knee deep in the white stuff but they got on with it.

The forecast is that next week will be warmer, all that snow will start to melt and that could lead to flooding in some parts.
Technically flooding is not possible as snow does not melt, it evaporates. Flooding would only occur when ice melts.

Whatever, it's bleeping cold here, though we didn't get the snow forecast last night. We've got off lightly compared to many

Much warmer hereabouts, snow is rapidly melting and all the ice has gone but sent Mobietta to the Village Shop for news of conditions further afield

No snow here. We get little wispy bits from time to time but nothing apart from that. However just 10 miles or so away they have more but all we have is a very cold and icy wind.

Just discovered a burst pipe outside.

Luckily it's only a connector popped off, which I can just sort myself. One of my mates is a retired plumber and he's going to pop round to help, that is to say drink my beer whilst watching me put things back together!

Thawing nicely here. Outside is looking better as well with the snow rapidly disappearing.

According to the BBC weather last night, Swansea was the warmest place in Wales at 5 degrees. Well we have had quite heavy rain overnight and it's still drizzling.

Just dug myself out - can now open the front door and hopefully the integral garage door now I've shifted the snow outside it although not sure why as the snow drift on the drive is going to take some serious shovelling or a thaw to shift it so the Mini will be staying indoors - oh and now it's raining

Good one David, as snow is made of ice, at the correct temperature it will melt, but under conditions of low relative humidity as we may have had over the past week it will go from solid state to vapour and bypassing the liquid state. This process is called sublimation and with the heat from the near-infrared portion of the sun and low relative humidity the snow seems to disappear. A classic example is a full ice cube tray in your freezer and a few week later the ice cubes have shrunk, this is sublimation.........................

David, I hope in a simple form that I have this correct, it was an interesting reply from you.

We've got off lightly compared to most. Too far southwest for the worst of the Beast and too far northeast for much from Storm Emma.

Just been reading the Oriana Facebook page and someone has written that there is a problem with heating in some of the cabins. Alta is probably not the best place to be moored with that problem. Current temperature in Alta showing as minus 18 degrees - rather them than me.

I have experienced this phenomenon sometimes with ice cubes BUT I don't often leave them in the freezer long enough for it to happen. They usually find their way into my G&T soon after they have frozen. ;)
