Pot Holes

Report this morning that the UK has 25k miles of road that needs repairing/replacing. Regarding the Pot Holes ,Councils say they dont have the funds to repair them even though Govt say's that funds are made available to Councils. What i want to know is ...Where is all the money we pay in Road Tax ?? Is this not what we pay it for ,to maintain the Roads??...

Sorry,I know ,it's just me being stupid....again.

This is the main reason that I am against devolution, aka the northern power house, local govt just cannot be trusted to spend money on things that rate payers want, they seem to see their role as growing jobs so that managers and elected officials can claim more pay for more responsibility.

Oddly enough there isn't enough money for potholes, social care, waste collection etc but there is enough in the coffers to raise pay and allowances for local and county councillors. Funny that.................

We recently had over a mile length of foot path re-tarmacked, yet repair the pot holes

.......Oooo no no no, waaaay down the list of priorities.

You can always tell when the new financial year is about to start as the council start using up any left over coffers on anything and everything.

We've recently had one or two roundabouts titivated up. Nothing wrong with the roundabouts at all but now they have lovely new kerbstones and fancy bits of green tarmac for cyclists to use. They must have cost a fortune and meanwhile we have to put up with potholes. I presume it's a case of targets and ring fencing but I always wonder where the priorities lie and who makes the decision to spend thousands making something look pretty whilst ignoring basic road maintenance.
Meanwhile not so far away from us is a junction which is downright dangerous, and has seen countless accidents but any amendment to the road layout is subject to countless inquiries, committee meetings, surveys etc costing even more money before any decision is made. Total madness and we're clearly not alone.

We can thank Winston Churchill in 1926 who raided the then 'Road Tax' leaving the roads to hand outs from the Government.

Somewhere I read that upgrades to footpaths and cycle lines etc are subsidised by the EU ... just saying.

I believe there are targets which are meant to be met by County Councils to provide x miles of cycle track which leads to short stretches of designated cycle track which are neither use to man nor beast. Some of you may have seen a short stretch going into Ambleside on a very narrow road which suggests you would need a very narrow car (remember the Messerschmitt KR200?) to avoid going into the cycle lane.
I would suggest instead of wasting money on meaningless projects the money would be better spent on improving road surfaces which would benefit motorists and cyclists alike instead of spreading yellow paint which means little or nothing.

Remember at school answering the question 'If it takes two men three days to dig a hole, how long would it take...........................?'
I wonder how many men and how long it took to produce that stretch of cycle track. I dread to think how much it would have cost taking into account the workers' time, the lorry, the planners, the accountants etc etc. If it wasn't a case of tax and ratepayers money being wasted it would be mildly amusing.

Over the last few months a 4 mile stretch of cycle path locally has been widened, at various points. Since the cycle lane, adjacent to a very busy link road to a motorway, I can count on one hand how many times I have seen this facility used by cyclists or even pedestrians!!! Now they think that widening it will increase the usage????

There are many unpolluted cycle routes in our area and they deem this necessary?
