Hi Mob .....l also got tips as a paper boy but the skinny buggers only gave me them at Christmas  :)

Whether they do or don't give all of our tips to staff can never be verified whilst there is a gagging order in place.

Being well into dogs (steady on Stephen) l can assure you that terriers, indeed all breads of dogs don't share out their food equally....but of course the top dog decides who gets what

Hope life is treating you well.

Moby, If I believed that the staff needed my tips to bring them up to a reasonable wage, and that everyone paid them, and that the increases were not just to top up the cruise lines profits, then I would be more likely to agree with you.
Until then, cynic that I am, the jury is still out as to what I will do.
I cannot believe that anybody, and especially a Terrier, really believes that P&O pocket the tips.

Not sure that Stephen ever strays onto the dark side, cruise critic, or if he does what his moniker is?

We have always left the auto tips in place but am now reconsidering.
The service on Azura in February was not great but we left the auto tips in place as we were too lazy to change it!!
May go back to "envelopes" when we go in September won't necessarily pay less, just be sure we will give to people we had good service from and I don't care if they have to pool it or not, it wouldn't be my problem.

I was on the Ventura cruise when the letter was left in the cabins. The massive queue at reception lasted the first three full sea days to madeira. If 50% of those who were waiting took the auto tips off then surely there needs to be another way of doing this. People were upset and angry over the letter, stating they always do the envelope etc at the end of the cruise. At the Peninsula lunch the reception manager told my wife the waiters and stewards all get paid regardless if auto tip is taken off and if they have been removed the ern even more money if given the cash envelope. I made a comment " just put it on the cruise price" he answered that Carnival will not change the policy as it stands. If you look on the Princess site it will tell you that the auto tip/ service charge what ever you want to call it is "pooled" and shared across the whole fleet.
On the last night of this cruise I went to shake hands with our waiters and say thank you they looked rather disappointed I didn't give them an envelope and one waiter turned his back on my wife so as not too shake her hand, we were both quite upset about that. It was as if we are dammed if we leave the autotip on and dammed for not giving them an envelope. Sorry I`m not paying twice ! The service we received wasn't the best we have experienced either. How ever the food was excellent.

Hi London Cruiser,

Whether or not you agree or disagree with auto-tipping...It is now flawed. Once autotippers give a little extra by way of an envelope it becomes "expected". Sadly your experience demonstrates the repercussions of this practice.

Keith, a good point raised, while I still leave the auto tips on I would be very disappointed if I received the response from the staff as described by London Cruiser.

OK, we've discussed this again last night and have now gone full circle.

Previously to auto tips, we tipped via the envelope, then when auto was introduced, we stuck with that because it was actually less than we used to leave.

Now we have decided to back to the envelope system and will actually tip what we think the service level was worth.
I shall let the cabin steward know at intro that we will be tipping him via the envelope system at the end of the holiday.
As for the waiters, we'll just wait and see how it all pans out.
As I've said, we more often than not don't eat in the MDR.

I do fear that the company may have shot themselves in the foot with these constant rises.

Simple maths show that something is not quite right.
I've calculated that a cabin steward looking after 10 cabins will pick up £490 a week in tips if every couple pay the standard £7 per day auto tip.
So, £490 a week on top of his wages. Even if the wages are as bad as some say (and they are not) then that's a tidy sum for a menial, unskilled worker.
Get out your calculator and work out a typical P&O ship with 2,000 passengers and each one paying £7 per day in tips.
Then multiply that by a fourteen night cruise.
That's a staggering amount of money.
Free and Accepted
