windows April update - BEWARE
On Saturday afternoon I hit 'upload ' for the Windows April updates Features update - much vaunted...
After a couple of false starts it uploaded and installed, and then....
It told me to select a keyboard language and then bounced to trouble shooters etc page. Left it til Sunday morning to check out....
Yesterday, after going through every hoop on the troubleshoot list including roll back, reinstall previous version, system restore..... Nowt was working. It said I had no restore point, hard errors the lot.
I ended up having to reset from basics only keeping my docs and piccies - everything I'd added since setting up the PC 18 months ago went.
Luckily afterwards it left a file saying what it had removed so I knew what to put back. It included a few things I don't remember adding so they can stay off, and included a month's sub for MacAfee!
In the middle of sorting it, my daughter got a message on her lappie asking if she was ready to upload the same update - it was dismissed quicker than it takes to tell!
Just got the printer to re-setup this morning

I updated overnight, and there appears to be no problems. Everything is there, printer works fine. Am I lucky?

I've got an Acer laptop and twice it has updated only to then fail to load up.Each time I have had to roll back to a previous windows version. I've now set it up as a metered internet connection which means the new 1803 update should not be downloaded but important security updates should. We shall see.

Re: windows April update - BEWARE
The last windows 10 update knocked my keyboard out.
Well, not actually out but changed the settings
when I pressed @ I got #
what's all that about ?
very easy to uninstall and then re install latest version, but it's never happened before.
after every Microsoft update I have to start as normal, then once fully loaded, press restart and start again.
The guy from Plusnet recommended that and it seems to do the trick.

I had that as well but it corrected itself the following day without any involvement from me.
ps ... it hadn't really, I just thought that it had
Press the Windows Key plus the Space Bar and it will change to the UK version

praps it was just my misfortune!
the new set up seems to include the new update - so it must have installed somewhere along the line!

Damn it. I've done it as despite the precaution of taking a full bsck up and setting a restore point immediately before I've got the major problems Meg had. The only option left appears to be the Reset one. Which offers me two alternatives. Lose everything or keep my data but lose all my apps and settings. I'm just awaiting a call back from MS before I press the nuclear button.
Why on earth does a huge multinational company like Microsoft not test things properly before rolling them out to millions of customers?

I was half way thro' the reset when the Comp expert rang me back. He was a bit bothered when I said what I had done, but calmed down when I said I don't use Outlook- cos presumably all my emails would have gone!Mervyn and Trish wrote: 22 May 2018, 10:31Damn it. However, it did very helpfully leave me a folder with a list of what had been removed, so I knew what to put back.
But it's taken 2 days to get everything ship-shape. The printer took a while, and my Office 365 had to be updated twice to get it back to 2016 edition. But I think it's all done now.
It has also left a folder of old stuff on the C drive called ( original this) Windows old! Not sure if it's safe to delete it.

Re: windows April update - BEWARE
When the agreed call return passed and I'd heard nothing I contacted the MS on line chat service.
Long story short it took a succession of techies and finally escalation to a Level 2 techie almost 12 hours to sort it out and so far most appears to be working again without loss of data or apps.
My AVG antivirus has an issue (I bet that's delierate or maybe less sinister a clash of firewalls, but I'll call them next week to sort that). And my Office 2013 told me my free trial period has ended and I needed to input my activation key if I had one. Fortunately I had kept it but the cynic in me wonders if that was deliberate to weed out pirate copies.
When he'd finally cracked it I asked the Level 2 techie why my pc had crashed. He said the update was dreadful and the development engineers were working overtime to sort out its problems. I suggested whoever launched it on the world without proper testing should be fired. He didn't argue. I imagine he's had some long days over the last couple of weeks!

Re: windows April update - BEWARE
It does seem a matter of luck.
Scarily I had no choice but to download more updates last night. The only choices I was offered were to update and switch off, or update and restart. No options to switch off without updating. So I did it with my heart in my mouth. To make it worse there were three batches before it was happy.
I suspect these were updates to repair the damage of the last one, as my AVG was working again after they were fininshed.
Fortunately no more drama.

Re: windows April update - BEWARE
I thought I had been lucky as the update downloaded with no problems whatsoever. Having read some of your experiences I must say I was a tad concerned but all went well...........................apart from the fact it had changed my settings to English (American) as opposed to English (UK). The keyboard was all over everywhere. Fortunately I have been able to rectify matters but wouldn't you think a large corporation such as Microsoft would get it right first time.
I hope everybody has managed to get back up and running now.

Re: windows April update - BEWARE
Oh tell me about it
I did the update on Tuesday night and as a result I have lost just about everything I had on my computer as it had to be taken back to basics, there is no way I could have ever sorted this out myself and had to ask a friend to look at it for me, he knows his way around a computer but even he was stumped hence the reason the only logical thing to do was to reset it.
I have been using 'live mail' which will no longer download ( I guess because Microsoft no longer support it ) I've heard so much negativity about W10 mail that I'm reluctant to use that plus it has never been configured and I'm not about to start messing myself !! so at the moment I have no windows mail facility, fortunately I also have an Outlook email address so I am able to use that and I can access my main mail via Webmail but it is very basic so not a long term solution.
I've also got McAfee back which I deleted months ago because I had nothing but trouble with it but after I'd reinstalled my own anti virus and I tried to delete it I got a warning to say if I 'uninstalled' it would change all my settings ?? so after all these problems I've just left it and hope that my own anti virus will override it.

I got MacAfee back too - but a one month freebie - so decided to leave it and dump it at the end of the month when they demand money.Dancing Queen wrote: 24 May 2018, 16:04

I had it once before and in order to delete it I had to download an uninstall tool - forewarned is forearmed....

I never had to pay for it Meg but I think it might have come as part of the package I bought for the first year.
As if on cue I have just had a mail flash up on my screen asking how likely I am to recommend W10 .. I hope they like my reply
