My Live Mail on W10 still works a treat thankfully …. but enough is enough over too many years so I for one will be investigating Apple prices new and / or refurbished me thinks.

I've persevered with Live Mail because I like it and I eventually got it to download when this laptop was new, I'm hoping eventually it will download again if I keep trying :wtf:

I never had to pay for it Meg but I think it might have come as part of the package I bought for the first year.

As if on cue I have just had a mail flash up on my screen asking how likely I am to recommend W10 .. I hope they like my reply
I can imagine - I've seen some of your 'polite ' replies!

Just be warned Moby. A friend is an Apple user and has had big issues in the past with their updates.

Over the last week my laptop has been running fairly slowly and start up is taking much longer, but just checking my update history I seem to still be on version 1709 with the latest update a somewhat worthless, to me as I use Sky Yahoo e-mail, Outlook update on 18th May. I am hoping my usual super fast windows 10 returns soon.

Hope I'm not tempting providence but I run a MacBook Air and have never had a problem with updates - they often happen remotely overnight - I am a fan of Apple products although regret buying a mini iPad - when I can justify it I will go back to the full size iPad and I have an iPhone too - what I like is the synchronisation between all the devices.

Does anyone have any suggestions re email, as I said in a previous post I've lost Live Mail following the update so I have been using my Outlook mail address, until yesterday when Microsoft in their wisdom decided to delete it and create a 'new account' for me ( how can they do this when it hasn't been requested or wanted !! ) to cut a long story short I eventually got into Outlook mail using my Microsoft login which also happens to be my main email address so now Outlook does not have a different address, having lost much of my hair tearing it out yesterday I left it and thought I would come back to it 'fresh' this morning so after clicking on everything available I was able to send an email to my husband to see how this was going to work, when received it comes up as Outlook followed by a long number, nothing at all to identify it as being from me and tbh if I received a mail like this I wouldn't even open it !! not a problem at the moment as I assume at some point I will be able to alter the number to a user name ?? so I sent the mail back to myself basically to check I could send/receive and then waited and waited and no sign of it.

I then logged into Webmail which I can do to access my emails although it isn't ideal because it is very basic ( it's ok as a temporary measure ) lo and behold the mail I had sent back to myself was sitting there so obviously the Outlook account is now linked to my main email address which wouldn't be a problem if I had Live Mail but I don't in fact all I have is Webmail.

So does anyone have any suggestions of an alternative ( tried and tested ) email supplier where if possible I can retain my current email address, I checked gmail out and I'm not able to do that with them.

I won't even mention how slow my computer is running .. what a total shambles this update has been for some of us oh and another update done last night failed to complete because apparently I turned it off .. really !!

I have been using emClient on my laptop for the past twelve months and it has behaved beautifully without any of the issues I had been having with Live Mail. It has had several good reviews in computer magazines and so far has been reliable.
PS Have emailed you!!

I use Hotmail for companies etc so it gets all the junk and gmail for a personal account known only to friends.

The former has the same log in as my Microsoft account. Both are linked to Outlook so appear and are synced on my PC, and android tablet and phone.

I hate WIndows with a vengeance and it is corporate doggie poos.

My home laptop did its update last week which took over 4 hours to complete and added all sorts of bloatware that I never wanted nor asked for. Now my Epson Scan program which has been working fine over seven years on three different machines crashes and hangs whenever it tries to open an Explorer file window. I wish these long-haired drug-crazed teenage hippies would just leave things alone instead of constantly meddling with things that have settled down. Some of our business machines using XL2003 have also had problems and needed patching. There was a problem with machines using Intel SSD memory but this has been fixed in the latest update patch. Too late for those poor souls who were affected.

Buy Apple or Linux and sleep more easlily.

I have used Outlook in pretty much the same way Merv for years and never had a problem before, it's only since this update when Microsoft 'appear' to have linked the accounts that they are no longer separate.

Hi DQ, do you really want or need to use a mail client? If not just use your browser and use the relevant web site.

As far as the Windows 10 update is concerned we are about halfway through updating all our PCs and so far (touch wood, rub rabbits foot, fingers crossed, kiss the blarney stone) not a single issue across 28 different makes and models of computers and laptops.

Given the volume of updates and reporting of issues, surely Microsoft must know what software or hardware is causing the problems?

That's certainly my preferred choice as well, much easier than faffing with Outlook, strange that I seem to be getting emails daily from ms trying to coax me to use it.

A number of the tech sites are reporting that the issue seems to occur if you have Avast or AVG anti virus installed on your computer and the suggestion is uninstall these before applying the upgrade, then you can re-install afterwards.

At the moment I'm not prepared to install the upgrade until the next release is out and i know it's being successfully installed with no problems.

Interestingly when upgrades normally arrive from Microsoft there is no option available when shutting down the laptop but to install but this time one of the shutdown options is simply that rather than update and shut down.

On a separate note, I've also been using EMclient for some time now and have found it a very good mail system, a few little glitches but they're quite responsive if you report issues.

I think the AVG thing is a possibility as I have that on my PC. It was also one of the programmes that didn't work after the update but was restored by one of the subsequent patches. But it doesn't interfere with the usual minor updates.

Hi Ken, being a total 'computer illiterate' I honestly wouldn't know if I want or need to use an mail client .. I just assume if I want to email anyone then I need an email account to do that ???

I have now set up emClient and at the moment like what I have seen.

So what's your view Ken? Would my PC be safe protected by Windows Defender alone? I've never been sure which is why I have AVG.

Ken didn't actually lose me Merv as I do respect he knows 'his stuff' as far as computers are concerned but I just thought to communicate with people you needed an email address, I'm always willing to learn if there is an alternative way of doing things.
