Robbers and Post Boxes
I see Boris has been accused of islamcphobia again for his comments about Muslim women wearing full face scarves. Apparently he thinks that women who wear them look like robbers and post boxes...
I can see the resemblance...can you?

Re: Robbers and Post Boxes
I am more concerned with the outcry it has caused from those supporting the continued use of these garments, which in my opinion are a major contributor to the lack of integration of the Muslim community with mainstream Britain.

Any clothing that obscures the identity of a person should be banned in my opinion.
In several countries women are forced to cover their faces, under threat of a beating....that's a good enough reason why hajab etc should be banned in this country.
This country should follow the lead of countries which have banned head covering in public places.....its oppressive!
How can there ever be integration of muslim women who through indoctrination are not allowed to show their faces outside of their immediate family?

Whilst I don't altogether disagree with you OL there is another side to this.
If you want people from another country/culture to dress the same as us then it is only right that when we go to another country that we adopt their dress codes - sadly this does not happen and is flagrantly disregarded.

As in Denmark the niqab and burka should be outlawed in this country. As a security issue there could be anybody behind the mask but I cannot see there could ever be any integration when you cannot see the face of the person you are talking to.
I also think it is reasonable if you go to live in another country you adapt your lifestyle to that of your hosts and respect their culture.

I am not suggesting that they should wear Western dress, but that they ought to water down some of the more extreme, and contentious dress codes that they observe in their homeland; and so should we if we opt to emigrate to another country.david63 wrote: 07 Aug 2018, 21:47Whilst I don't altogether disagree with you OL there is another side to this.

While there’s a debate to be had, why am I not suprised that nobody’s critised Johnson about the language he used. How would you lot like it to be ridiculed over how you dress by a top politician and have it all splashed over the media. I bet you wouldn’t like it one bit

I personally think a Boris is right and just telling what most people already think. And if it upsets a few bleeding hearts so be it.

There are two issues here, notably the wearing of face coverings and the behaviour of Boris. At the moment posts have revolved around the former. The question the OP posed was "I can see the resemblance can you?" so naturally that is the course the topic has followed.Gill W wrote: 07 Aug 2018, 23:19While there’s a debate to be had, why am I not suprised that nobody’s critised Johnson about the language he used. I'm sorry, but we always refer to the full face covering as pillar boxes..., but of course to say it in public is some'at else.
I have no problems with the hijab ( which Nadia from Bake off wears) - it's the whole face covering that I find intimidating

Could I wear one of these next time I am shopping or going to the bank, petrol station etc?

What if it upsets Moslem women who wear a burka? It can't be very nice to be described as a 'letter box'? Would you like It if Johnson ridiculed at middle aged men and and compared them to an inanimate object?Stephen wrote: 08 Aug 2018, 07:11I personally think a Boris is right and just telling what most people already think. A motor cycle helmet isn't a religious garment?Meg 50 wrote: 08 Aug 2018, 08:33re robbers - you're not allowed to wear motor cycle helmets in banks..... what's the difference?

Boris is not alone in his thinking Gill, allot of other countries have actually banned them.Gill W wrote: 08 Aug 2018, 10:08What if it upsets Moslem women who wear a burka? I am not certain that the Hijab, burka or anything similar could be classed as religious, it appears to be designed to stop men from letching over the womenfolk, if it was only worn when they attended the mosque then it might be deemed to have a religious significance.

This is really all about Boris positioning himself for a leadership challenge. All publicity is good publicity when pandering to his electorate.

My take on the religious garb is really When in Rome. It's not socially acceptable for a lady to walk down the street in Rhyiad in a pair of shorts. Equally the same applies in the UK. Full face coverings are not acceptable in my opinion.

The irony of it all is, that he was actually saying that burkas SHOULDN'T be banned.Stephen wrote: 08 Aug 2018, 10:20Boris is not alone in his thinking Gill, allot of other countries have actually banned them.Gill W wrote: 08 Aug 2018, 10:08What if it upsets Moslem women who wear a burka? You didn't answer my question, is it ok to for Johnson compare a minority group of women to an inanimate object, thus dehumanising them?

Re: Robbers and Post Boxes
My Moslem friend who I used to work with wouldn't be seen dead outside her house without her hijab. For her its nothing to do with men letching over her - it is her choice to wear her scarf. Her dad or her brother aren't forcing her to do it. One of her sisters never wears a hijabtowny44 wrote: 08 Aug 2018, 10:21I am not certain that the Hijab, burka or anything similar could be classed as religious, it appears to be designed to stop men from letching over the womenfolk, if it was only worn when they attended the mosque then it might be deemed to have a religious significance.

I don't think it's an issue over the wearing of the hijab but rather over the niqab and the burka both of which cover the face. There is no religious requirement to wear either of those as I understand it.Gill W wrote: 08 Aug 2018, 11:23My Moslem friend who I used to work with wouldn't be seen dead outside her house without her hijab. Quite simply no and no. As I said the question was 'I can see the resemblance, can you?' as opposed to the questions you have just asked and to which I have given my answers.
