Actually the safest choppers are the sharpest … the blunt ones are an accident waiting to happen

I recently brought a new chopper as some of the logs weren't split right through. So far all fingers accounted for and claret where it's supposed to be.......in a glass

Christmas in the Caribbean for me and the family again this year so low key at home - won't "trim" up - we'll enjoy all the trees and trimmings on Britannia

Also means I won't buy chocolates etc. - won't be home to eat them and I certainly won't want them when I get home :lolno:
I'm very envious Jan, we did the Caribbean at Christmas for over twenty years and I loved every one, unfortunately we can no longer go due to insurance restrictions but I still love Christmas on a ship closer to home.
Enjoy.
Only the second time we've been at Christmas - governed by school holidays as both son and daughter in law are teachers and this is the first time since 2015 the dates have fallen right. Everyone so excited as you can imagine :D

When asked that question, I just reply "anything ridiculously expensive"

After spending yesterday shifting a truck load of logs to the log store at the back of the house, maybe a new back !
I underestimated what a 'truck load' looked like.
The large log store is now full and there is the same amount again in the garage.

Mrs B's timing was impeccable and she arrived home just as I was sweeping up :o
I reckon she sat round the corner watching !

I feel your pain barney.
We had two one tonne bags emptied on the drive a few weeks back. I did ask the driver if he could just slide the bags off the back and drag them into the garage like previous deliveries, and we could give him two empty bags in exchange. But no, he wanted to keep his nice new bags. So Mrs S and I spent the next half hour or so shifting by barrow all the logs and filling bags in the garage.

My wife gets the gardner to put our logs in the log store.........It plays havoc with my back though!

We used to have a multi fuel stove but now have a log burner.........much prefer the log burner as there is hardly any ash after each burn as opposed to the multi fuel which required cleaning every other burn. What l have found is that it is best to pay a little bit more for hardwood logs as they burn far much longer than the cheaper mixed bags.

No need for a 'Sweep' then Mob.......Sooty will be disappointed.

Round this way we pay around £100 for a builders bag full, so it looks like you're quids in........and you still have some fingers left to stoke the fire

I paid £170 for the truck load. Looks equivalent to about four builders bags.
He was recommended by the compny that installed the wood burner.
It was a tipper truck and he tipped the blooming lot on my drive.
It's all very seasoned and dry so should burn well, or so the guy said as he drove off, waving, with my cash in hand.
He said that he liked a gamble and was off to Blackpool today, so at least he had some stake money.

At least we will all be toasty for Christmas.
Last year was our first in this house and it was bl**dy freeeezzzzing.
Since then we've had a whole new central heating system and the burner installed.

It is interesting-ish to note that wood for one's fire can look really dry and yet contain up to 60% water … just saying

That's why I always keep a log carrier full in the lounge so that it is as dry as possible before use.

Anyway, a dousing of petrol soon sorts any wetness out :D

This is North Devon , mate !

Many have never left their village !

Occasionally they may wander into the 'big city' - Bideford

I asked a bloke in the pub last week if He'd ever been to Barnstaple and he replied "oh no. too near to England" :D

Back to the logs - it's a mixture with a fair bit of hard wood in it and very, very dry.
Had a roarer last night and burned five logs in total.
At that rate, I have about seven years worth.

Hi Barney, if I lived in that part of our little island I dont think I would move either. That being said the 'sunlite uplands' of Shropshire has to be a fair compromise.

The good thing with that 'cheap' :sarcasm: mixed wood is that you end up with quite a bit of kindling and the soft wood is much easier to chop should you need more.

Still the wrong side of the border though. :D
