Changes to passport renewal

just renewed ours in June, and no, not because of Brexit but they were running out . so we will have the EU maroon ones for the next 9 3/4 years, not sure that's what I wanted, but had no choice if I wanted to go on holiday. I would have been peeved to have lost the six months still on them though.

I've just realised that if we get on the 2020 cruise we have registered for, our passports run out 5 months after the last date of our June holiday and you should have 6 months left on your passport for a lot of countries and for PO. Bearing in mind that I am the ultimate worry guts I had made a diary note to send off our passports in January 2020 (wanting them back well before the June holiday that year) so that we would still get the 9 months added on. No point in worrying about that now as it looks like we will lose those months February to October anyway.

I wonder how many people don't check the final date on their passports and the 6 month rule.

when we were queing at check in for our Ocana cruise last year - someone ahead of us was rejected for just that!
Not sure if they were travelling on the cruise or not - P&O hadn't the whole plane

We're going to experiment with taking our own photos which can then be uploaded since none of our other details have changed. There's a very helpful list of dos and don't on the passport website.

I mustn't forget - my passport is my only ID since I have no driving licence.

Just a couple of weeks after my last one died I had to collect my Mother's ashes from the Crem . They expected photographic ID. I had a heaven's own job persuading them to let me have her -despite them knowing I was coming in etc etc. Eventually they relented cos I still looked like my old picture in the o/d passport ( wasn't too chuffed about that back-sided compliment)

We tried taking our own photo for my wife but they rejected it. Said they couldn't see the outline of my wife's head. Which is bizarre because (a) my wife has fair hair against the pale background they specified and (b) we could quite clearly anyway.

In the end we went a photo shop that charged £10ish but guaranteed they'd do it again if the PO rejected it. That included hard copies and a digital code so the PO could retrieve it on line.

I'm not going to clutter this thread either, but that is an excuse for money making. They could simply issue the passports for the standard 10 years, which would satisfy the EU, and refund any unused time on the old one.

My Passport was due for renewal in January and as I would be away at that time I had to do it now.

I had my photo taken at Max Spielman in Tesco - £9.99. They then e-mail the photo to the Passport Office for checking.

I sent my application 3 September (£85) and was kept in touch by Text. The first accepting receipt of my application and unless they had any queries I would receive my Passport by 28 September. In the event my new Passport arrived 12 September dated 10 September.

A brilliant service I thought.

I recently renewed mine on line. The cost on line is £75.50. Took my photo on my phone so no extra cost there. Had three goes before they accepted my photo. All very straight forward.

Nothing to do with the EU. The EU has not changed its regulations and requirements.

Britain is getting itself into line with everybody else. It was Britain's choice to become a third country and this is one of the consequences. Nothing petty or pathetic about it. We shall have the same status as any other third country. This is what you voted for.

Got round to it last Thursday. We took dozens of photos until we got one each that definitely fulfilled the requirements on their dos and don'ts list.
Sent it in online Thurs teatime, posted back the old passports on Friday morning. mine had to go to Durham, OH to Peterborough.


They emailed progress every step of the way.

OH got his new one in the post this morning, and I received an email a few minutes ago saying:
Your passport application has been approved.
What happens next?
Your new passport is being printed. We'll let you know when it's on its way.
We'll send back your old passport separately. It won't be in the same envelope as your new passport.

So, a week's turn-round - pretty good and painless

Someone over on another forum has said that they recently had their passports renewed and still got the remaining time added to their new passports, maybe you could advise what happens with your Meg?
