Subjects on which diverse opinion is not allowed

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed there are a number of topics on which an alternative view is not permitted and one is threatened with burning at the stake if one disagrees?

One of course is the B word, with both sides guilty, and on which I shall say no more.

Another is electric cars. Not hybrids, the whole hog. Of course they suit some people and with more development of batteries and charging infrastructure may be the way ahead in 20 years. But not for me yet. I did consider one when I last swapped but having considered price, depreciation, the mileage I cover and the types of roads I do it on I decided to stick with internal combustion. But if I attempt to join any debate, without any knowledge of my circumstances, the electric advocates accuse me of heresy and total ignorance.

Another, veganism. I like a decent vegetarian meal and we eat vegetarian quite often. But I couldn't do the discipline of going wholly vegan. But if I enter a debate I am apparently destroying the world and guilty of terrible animal cruelty. Try pointing out to a vegan that farmers are businessmen and that without us carnivores there will be no sheep, cows, goats, pigs, chickens. And without them grazing the countryside it will change dramatically and with it our whole ecosystem. Anyway I like a bacon sandwich.

So are there other topics on which only one opinion is now allowed?

It reminds me a an incident that happened many years ago when I had a boat moored on the Medway at Wateringbury.

The chap who had the adjacent mooring was quite a 'character' and often stripped off and dived into the river.
When I say stripped off, I mean everything.

Anyway, one particular weekend, we had guests coming down for a bbq so I asked, quite reasonably, I thought, that would he mind keeping his cacks on while our company was present.

His reply was (in a plummy posh London accent) you do what you like on your effing boat, and I'll do what I like on my effing boat.

As far as he was concerned, the topic was now closed.

Now, I consider myself a very reasonable guy and have no issues with those preferring an alternative living style, as long as it doesn't impact on my enjoyment of life.

So, one thing that Brexit has taught us all is to exercise caution when discussing subjects with people that you don't know well.
No matter the subject.

If someone wants to drive an electric vehicle, fine by me, but don't expect me to sign up.
If someone wants to go Vegan, again my reaction is the same.

Live and let let live and vive le difference.

tall conifers, some love them and their " privacy" that they bring, and others, usually the neighbours, hate them.


if you ask, we are currently trying to get our neighbours to see sense over their 30ft ones in their front garden.

We have a unique view of a middle aged man who sunbathes totally naked in his garden, and even does some gardening in the altogether. It causes some amusement for Sue and our very elderly female neighbour but it is not a pretty sight. Personally I am not of that persuasion. Sue tells me that I missed one of the local student fraternity, female, about 20 years old, walking down the road stark naked at 3am one morning. 25 years ago I might have got out of bed to see that vision, but this time I just said "Yes sure, pull the other one it's got bells on".

I find these days people totally unable to accept that others may possibly think differently from them. I may not agree with other people’s opinion - on many subjects - but I do respect their right to their own opinion. I so wish others would do the same.

Gilly - check your deeds because normally there are restrictions regarding the height of a fence/trees/hedge you are allowed from the front of your property, we had this problem a few years ago when new neighbours moved in and promptly planted a row of conifers, it never really became a problem because they planted them on our land so it was quite easy for me to exercise our right to have them removed and had they moved them to their own land eventually they would have totally blocked the light out from two of their windows, regardless of that though if I remember correctly you are not allowed to erect a fence/hedge higher than I think 4ft at the front.
