Shut that door!
Am I the only person who thinks there’s something wrong when our prime Minister says he’s not sure how many Romanian/Bulgarians will be entering our country? Open borders or not I would have thought it responsible to have a clue as to how many will be signing on for benefits?

Re: Shut that door!
No you're not the only one OL. I am absolutely appalled by the indifference of successive governments to the immigration problem. Blair introduced a secret policy of opening our borders to make us a multicultural society. He then opened up our borders when some of the eastern bloc entered the EU and when all other countries delayed entry. All this coupled with the incompetent Lin Homer who presided over years of chaos at the Border Agency and an appeal process which was cumbersome and incapable of coping with the problems.
I envy the Americans and the Australians for their immigration policies but it seems our politicians don't have the bottle to get to grips with our immigration policies. We have much to learn from them.
By all means let us have a multicultural society but not at the expense of an unsustainable benefit system, insufficient housing, an over-stretched NHS, lack of resources in education, and the myriad of other problems presented to a country which is full and struggling.

Hi OBF
Precisely...Governments have repeatedly shown they fall very short of the mark when it comes to controlling who comes and who goes back...if the last fiasco is anything to go by we should expect to hear of another 80k written off due to our inept immigration control.
Cameron will be introducing a system whereby immigrants have to prove they are (after 6 months of entering this county) actively looking for work before they can claim further benefits...well that’s bl**dy reassuring isn’t it.
I also envy the Australians....if you an’t got what they need you don’t get in....seems sensible to me.
Regards
Keith

No gfw, you are wrong, my friend. It has nothing to do with BNP, UKIP maybe but not BNP. The country is overcrowded and struggling and the current situation is unsustainable.

Re: Shut that door!
Now that UKIP are being taken seriously, Cameron has been forced to announce all these 'tough' measures to placate those of us aghast at the ridiculous EU open doorspolicy. I hope he is running even more scared after the local election is May. Giant, UKIP and the BNP are as diferent as a ferret and a chicken.

Re: Shut that door!
The ' expert ' on the News last night said that the PM has only announced one new measure and that all the others were already in place.
It seems that the Trotskies who control many of the Labour Councils and parts of the NHS can't be arsed to reclaim the money nor to give us Brits the priority for the various Services that we believe to be rightfully ours. In spite of his recent announcement it seems that they still cannot be forced into doing so, I happen to think they should be forced into it.
ps ... according to coaching chums OZ is full of illegal Vietnamese and the Yanks have zillions of Mexicans.

Re: Shut that door!
Thinking about the PM's new, or not, tightening of benefit rules for immigrants, I find the media attitude totally disingenuous. First they whip up a public frenzy by publicising immigrant families living in luxury houses on benefits when there is a waiting list for UK citizens, and how many claim child allowances for families overseas. Now they perform an about turn and start to emphasise how few immigrants actually live on benefits, and how the majority of immigrants are nett contributors to the economy.

Re: Shut that door!
too little, too late
politics is a 4 year popularity contest, nothing more and any politico who dares to upset the apple cart gets derided and is out sharpish
it's about time we adopted the same criteria for imigration as Canada, Australia etc and closed the door, to anyone coming here ,who does not have a job to come to and proof of work, accomodation and income are needed before any migrant sets foot on UK soil
why are we too scared to say no, to people, why are our politicians to wet to stand up and do the right thing?

Hi HK
I’ve got plenty of time for UKIP’s Nigel Farage however he needs to be careful about who he appoints into prime positions within his party. Neal Hamilton’s election onto UKIP's national executive committee won’t sit well with many, and more appointments along this line will do nothing for the party’s creditability.
Still won't stop me ticking their box though...even if it is just to make politicians sit up and listen.

Agreed OL. The Hamiltons need shooting, or forcing to rejoin the Tories or both even.

Re: Shut that door!
I have no problem with migrant workers coming to this country since they are often more motivated, better skilled and more reliable than many of the indigenous people. In the noughties someone complained about migrant workers taking British jobs .. that was not the the case the British were throwing the jobs at migrant workers because they were too lazy to do the jobs themselves .. it started off with low paying jobs (that nobody else wanted) and then the second wave of highly skilled workers also arrived and sadly the government lost control.
As per the OP I fear that if this is not kept tightly controlled then we will have a serious problem as more-and-more come over for the benefits and ship the money off-shore (damaging the economy here and in their own countries). I have no faith that this government or the public sector staff have the desire, inclination or ability to stop it though.
Personally I would say that the country of origin should be made responsible for any benefits paid out ... that would stop the migration-for-benefits crowd while welcoming the skilled worker.
