Hidden people

Unread post by jacksparrow »

Silly question....

When you are on the home page it shows the number of people on the site with their names but sometimes it also shows hidden people.

What are they?

Is there an option to remain hidden when you log-in (or am I thinking of another forum?)

Isn't there an option when you log in whether you want people to know whether you're online or not. I presume they would be the hidden people.

Soz Romig, is that what you meant?

There are some "membera" using the term very loosely called Bots (these are things like Google) that index the site so that it can be found by the search site, and these are hidden users

For those who my not be aware what a bot is
It's a search engine bot.
Google use them all the time to watch which pages you are viewing and then tailor adverts that you receive to suit.
Have you not noticed how advertising follows you around?
For example if you go from a cruise site say to a football site advertising for cruises pops

But if you use a cookie blocking program the advertsing stops following you around.

I was surprised a few days ago to find that the P&O main site loads over 100 cookies onto your PC whenever you visit the home page. In the last 10 days I have blocked over 8k cookies and I get non those annoying adverts at the top of a Google search anymore

Thanks for the links. I'll have a look at that. Anything which helps to keep my pooter running sweetly.

I often wonder how useful a section would be for computer related issues, useful not only for those who are relative beginners but for aspiring competents too.

There is usually an option in the settings that allows you to say whether or not you want others to know if you are online or not

On this board it is in settings -> board preferences -> hide my online status

However it is circumventable
