Travel insurance - again...

Just before Mothering Sunday the vampires refused my OH's blood - it turned out he had 12% kidney function.....


To cut a very long story short, he has just ( 6 days ago) had surgery to deal with the blockage which caused the problem.

We had a UK holiday booked which we cancelled and the hotel refunded the payment ( as outlined in their T&C).

We didn't have insurance - cos we don't bother if it's a UK hol.

We are now looking to get a hol this year. The one we had booked we decided to postpone until next year cos it's a long drive to get there.
So are considering a short break - either city by train, or countryside by car.

BUT OH is muttering Jersey (in October). This being a flight etc would mean travel insurance.
I am not convinced it is a good idea premium-wise so soon after surgery and all the squillions of tests he had.

The problem wasn't cancerous. so is sorted completely (once he's signed off by the consultant on Sept 5).
His kidneys are now at 39% and rising steadily.

Does anyone have any idea:

1) if premiums are weighted so soon after surgery?
2) is there an optimum time to wait after surgery before even asking?

I am not sure about this Meg, but I would imagine they will want him to have been discharged from Consultant care.

The cost will depend on the level of perceived risk.

If you require cover rather than an exclusion then there will probably be a period beyond the date of his final visit to the consultant … or at least it was in my own experience.

Does going by ferry reduce the risk ?

I did a compare the meerkat thingy and his surgery wasn't an option (the nearest was enlarged prostate), nor was the means of travel! He'll be signed off before we book - just in case....

We've had a few weekends away at a nice hotel on the edge of Dartmoor called The Moorland Hotel.
Going down again in early September.

It's very convenient for anywhere along the south Devon coast

There are lots of lovely places to go without taking the risk of flying.

Whatever you decide, have a lovely time

I think we might end up staying in the UK and postpone Jersey until next year. We're vaguely considering Norwich at the mo - but got to see if there's enough to keep us busy

It might be worth speaking to Holiday Extras insurance, they actually listen and treat each individual case on it's own merits rather than reading from a 'script' or at least that has been our experience with them.

If the Consultant says he is fit to travel there shouldn't be a problem except some insurances do load policies for about 6 months post op, as Moby says it will depend on the perceived risk.

Have you thought about a midweek break at a Warners Meg.

That's a good idea from Lindsey. We used to use the swimming pool facilites at Bembridge Coast on the Isle of Wight and we were very impressed with their facilities and evening entertainment.

We have just come back from a coach trip to Scotland which took a lot of pressure off my husband from a driving point of view and before we went I wasn't 100% sure we would enjoy it as we are cruising fanatics but we thoroughly enjoyed it. Could your husband cope with a coach trip ? We thoroughly enjoyed ours and all the included excursions but wouldn't recommend the long trip in one day from Isle of Wight to Peebles ( over 10 hours) so you would have to find just how far you feel your husband could cope with regards to any trip to and from the hotel and the length of any excursions in any area you would like to visit. Also, make sure the coach has a loo on board !

Some good suggestions on here so hope your husband continues to improve and you can both enjoy a well earned break. Also, we currently use Holiday Extras for insurance. Best wishes, Maureen.

Meg50, there should be no problem getting insurance however when we were shopping around we could not get a condition of Julies covered because it had been less than 12 weeks since her operation. There was also no coverage for a condition for which Julie was awaiting a further consultation.

I don't know if the above is industry wide but it came up with repeatedly for us
